Chicago Half Marathon
60F / 16C
Total Time = 1h 46m 53s
Overall Rank = 1268/8991
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 162/639
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30, got showered, made breakfest, and walk to Wrigley to catch my shuttle to the start. I was very nervous on the bus ride, not sure why.
Event warmup:

A little bit of jogging, there was a chill in the air and I just wanted to keep warm.
Run
  • 1h 46m 53s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I placed myself if front of the 1:45 pacer hoping I could stay ahead of him and his group. First mile went out a little to fast in 7:30 second mile was 7:45 and I really thought I would be in for a long day. I just didn't have any juice, my legs were moving but I just didn't "feel it" today. I didn't train for this race or taper which is probably why...I was under 8 mins heading to LSD and then saw my dad/stepmom/bro and fargo (choc lab) which gave me a pep in my step. Told my dad going by I didn't have it..but for some reason, I finally got warmed up and started picking up the pace, I was holding a 7:55 average until the false falts of LSD knocked me off that pace. By Mile ten I was right at 8 min pace, but was happy, cause I knew I could just shuffle in for a PR. Getting off the drive I knew the course and figured we had a 1.5 mile left...tried to keep everthing under control and not ease up cause I knew the PR was going to fall and fall big if I kept the pace. Coming down the last street the crowds picked up again and my family was .3 miles out cheering for me...kicked it into overdrive and rip up the last 1/4 mile, outkicking a few people right at the end for a PR of nearly seven and half mins.
What would you do differently?:

Can't be hard on myself of taking 7:30 off my 1/2 PR which is on this course
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, quads were barking, changed and went out to lunch with the family.

Event comments:

My goals three goals were sub: 1:54:11 (last year's pr), Sub 1:50, and the 'would be sweet' goal of 1:45.

Just missed that super aggressive goal..will probably take next year off unless I'm recovered from IMOO. Top 15% of the race!! Wow! this tri training pays off!!! I was on the news too

Thanks..the race starts at the Science Industry Musuem campus. Most of the race is on Lake Shore Drive and a few spots in the surronding area. Some spots have good crowd support, mostly near the start and museum

Congrats on a well run race.  I had nothing left for a kick at the end of mine a few weeks ago.  Good job with your pacing.  And a nice day for a run, eh?

I'll still talk to you but not hangloose....

I guess I ran by a TV camera, cause I had a couple of friends call me about it, I didn't see it. I was busy watching DA Bears.

Great race, Hayes!  Congratulations on the PR.  I'd put my money on you running sub 1:45 in the very near future.

Cheers!

Nicely done!! Way to kick the crap out of your PR. I missed my under 1:50 goal by 10 seconds. I'm thinking I can make that up next year. And it certainly WAS a great day for a run.
