Total Time = 1h 05m 47s
Overall Rank = 419/1500
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 53/146
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and grabbed a bar and some water. Changed and took off to get a parking spot. Checked in, found my rack and went to get body marked. Went back to transition and had a ton of time to go through all of my gear and get everything setup how I wanted to.
Event warmup:

Didn't do much of anything. I just wandered around and took everything in. My nerves and adreline basically had me going. Probably not ideal for the future, but it worked this day.
Swim
  • 09m 41s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

I wansn't really ready for the start. I mean I was suited up had all of my stuff, but when they said 10 minutes I didn't realize how quick that would go by. I ended up at the back and I quickly figured out I should have been up a bit further. Once I got a lane and/or figured out how to get by some people. I thought I would settle down, but then the OWS anxiety started setting in. It seemed like the swim took forever. I think I took a good line because I was alone most of the swim and I finished pretty well considering I started in the back.
What would you do differently?:

Be more ready to get in the water and get a decent starting positions. I also need to figure out how to relax more in the water.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I decided to hook my shoes to the pedals so that I wouldn't have to run the 100 yards in my cleats. As I've mentioned in my blog, that didn't turn out so well. Each shoe ended up unclipping and I had to get off the bike and put my shoes on and then get back on. 20-25 people passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Either practice having my shoes attached to the bike or run with my shoes on.
Bike
  • 31m 51s
  • 8.1 miles
  • 15.26 mile/hr
Comments:

The above time includes my T1 & T2 times. My bike computer said I averaged around 18.5 for the bike portion, which is great for me. I was pushing pretty hard, especially at the end when I was trying to hold a guy off, which I did.
What would you do differently?:

Train more to become stronger in the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I felt again that I was quick in transition. I wished they would have had times because I thought it was one of my strong points. Now who knows. I ripped off my stuff, threw on my running shoes and hat and I was off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 24m 15s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I was really surprised when I saw this split. This was better than my 4th of July 5k by over a minute. I was stoked. I picked a guy that was faster than me and just stayed with him and decided I wanted to beat him. I think it helped me motivate and pass the time. I ended up passing him and holding him off. We laughed about our battle after the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

I grabbed some water and went over and met with the family. Walked around with them and went over and got a 5 minute massage. That was nice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pre-race/first-timer nerves, trying some new things in the race that I hadn't practiced and probably my three days in Vegas the week before...ha ha.

Event comments:

I thought it was a great race for a beginner. I had a great time and would recommend it for begginers. Otherwise it might be a bit short for the money.

For your first race (even if it were your 10th race) this is one hell of a performance. And your run, after really pushing yourself on the bike, is awesome.

You're the man!

Thanks for the kudos everyone, I really appreciate it. My goal was to train to make sure I could finish and not kill myself. It would appear I did better than what I set out, which really is nice.

Great job on your race!! Your times are impressive. It's unfortunate we did not get to meet at the Expo. It would of been nice to start the race with a familiar face. Again great job.
