Pre-race routine:

Pouring rain when woke-up....had to get motivated to walk out of the house; breakfast of bagel w/pb and bottle of gatorade. Been fighting cold/sore throat x 7 days, on 2 different antibiotics. Not a great beginning for my first Tri.
Event warmup:

Nothing--might want to change this next time.
Swim
  • 08m 51s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

1st lake swim. Had lots of trouble getting used to the crowd. Ended up breast stroking half of 1st 200m trying not to run over the guy in front. Got caught behind slower swimmer and got run over trying to get around him.

2nd swim went better. Needed better conditioning. My breast stroke was able to keep speed with others' free; was able to pass people with free but didn't have the lungs left to do that for long
What would you do differently?:

Break free earlier. Add'l time in the pool on long distance swims
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Shoes on at T1
What would you do differently?:

Get used to running in shoes. Run thru the TA
Bike
  • 00m
  • 12.8 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Take in better fluids and some nutrition on the bike. Might not have felt so burnt if I had done better job fueling up
What would you do differently?:

More fluids/nutrition earlier on bike
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

too slow making the change over. Was using cycle shoes and had to go back to run shoes
What would you do differently?:

consider cages on bike and run shoes throughout
Run
  • 00m
  • 3 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

run course was fine. Sucked serious wind on the run. Couldn't exchange air well with my lungs feeling crappy
What would you do differently?:

More run training--Running is still my weakest link.
Post race
Warm down:

None

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more conditioning work, particularly on swim and run.

Event comments:

Timing malfunction. Could only provide 1st swim and overall times. Set goal for myself of 1:40 for my first event. Had done gym version 2 weeks ago at 89 minutes approximating swim times on elliptical. Some of lost time was due to being sick, some was due to slow transitions. Overall, a great learning experience. Ready to do the next one.
