I absolutly HATE dogs! I didn't used to but now I do. I live in south georgia and I prefer out of town country routes to cut down on traffic and all of those have several several dogs that do nothing but chase you.

I have tried the NO! trick and it doesn't work, and what ever you do don't slow down. Yesterday I got attacked by three dogs. On my out route it was a down hill slope and I spotted them running in my direction from across a field. I changed gears and was gone before they could get to me. I was feeling pretty good about it but on the way home they were sitting by the road waiting on me. The big one ran right in front of me and broke my speed, the one on the left bit me on the back of the heel and tried to pull me off the bike, while the third one was on my right barking and growling like mad. I kicked like crazy and pedeled as best I could and managed to get away without any injuries but it really scared me.

Maybe I am a wus but this is not the first time this has happend although this is the first time it has been multiple dogs. It has gotten to the point where instead of injoying my ride all I do is watch every yard and field looking for an attack. It completely sucks all the fun out of a ride. I am almost at the point were I dread my weekly long ride.

I am getting some pepper spray but I am scared it will blow back on me. I also have a axe handle I am trying to figure out some way to strap to my back so I can play polo with the mutts. If either of those don't work I am going to get a .22

I was bitten by a dog on New's Year's Day. I was riding through a park and the owner had his two dogs off the lease. "They won't bite," he assured me as I stopped and he tried to get them nder control. He was wrong. The bite broke the skin and hurt a bit, but nothing series. I now ride and run with a can of the commericially available dog repellant handy. I think it was $7. However, I've never had an opportunity to test it to see if it works. My wife will not let me test it on our dog (just kidding).

You could always test it on your wife..... j/k

I live and ride in the country and deal with dogs on a regular basis. Country dogs run for a living and are hard to out-sprint and kicking them is tough to do at 20 mph.

A water bottle squirt works OK, but better than that is a bottle of water mixed with lots of cayenne pepper. A good dose of this into their eyes and nose will turn them back.

I pretty much have most of the dogs on my regular route trained by now and they no likey Jimmy K's pepper sauce.

just don't mix-up the bottles...

Call animal control and tell them where they attacked you at.

I live in the country and everywhere around us are dogs....Only once did I have one bare its teeth with intent to attack....I easily out ran the dog.  The good thing, I know where the house is and I point it out to my fellow riders.  For the most part, the majority of dogs look at as a novelty not a chew toy.

Try a little squirt with your water bottle, it works every time dogs have no defense. I sort of think of them as sprint practice.

Exactly.

We had a dog come out on our ride yesterday... I got my water bottle out before I got to the dog... and squirted some water on him. He backed off and went back to his area.

I use the dog pepper spray but have only used it twice. The dogs that come out to chase and bite you dont bother me as much as the dumb ones that come out to run with you and always want to run in front of you. Had a few close calls of almost running over a big dumb dog and I kow that I would lose that one...

Derek-

Thanks for the relief, I needed the grin tonight. Yes I know your serious, and yes I am in agreement with you, my problem is that I have not figured a good way to carry while on a bike. If I tuck it in my shorts, the weight will pull them down, if I wear a pistol belt, I'll look like the guy from Reno 911. Fanny pack? Naw, not easy enough to get open while riding. Attach it to the bike like the wild west?

If I'm swerving, it's because I'm reloading...

I thought cycling jersays had gun pockets in the back just for this reason.

you can always carry a rifle like those skiers do that would work also.

I'm a dog guy. I've got 2 labs and a rhodesian ridgeback whose about 110 lbs and 10 months old. The labs are farm dogs. There's no way you'd outrun my dogs on a bike. I can't even drive my truck fast enough on the dirt road to outrun em. That dog repellent stuff is worth it's weight in gold and it's only like 6 bucks a can. A can should last you forever. Also, if you don't wanna do that, put vinegar in a bottle. It'll drop a dog in about half a second and there's no lasting damage. I used to use a vinegar water mix to train my labs.

I was out running one evening and I saw the crazy old man who lived in my apartment community walking his dog. As I went to pass the man and the dog, the dog clamped down on my ankle. The owner's response "He's just playing." The dog didn't do any damage, but people need to keep an eye on their pets.

you can also blast them with an ammonia spray. you get that stuff on their nose, they'll never chase you again.

I am far beyond accepting any excuses for dogs that chase me. Out in the country, many owners don't care that their dogs are protecting territory. And where I bike in the country, I'm not excited to go to a broken down trailer in the middle of nowhere and file a complaint at 7am on a Sunday morning. Not to mention the fact that it's hard to get to the door to file a complaint when you have the owner's dog trying to eat you.

I'm also not going to risk the dog running in front of me and sending me OTB while I try to save us both. I'm not going to risk panicking and swerving and losing control while going down a hill at 25 or 30 mph.

I've got a dog that chases me on one route, and next summer I'm bringing pepper spray. I've tried yelling, stopping, and being a nice guy. But my patience was worn thin last year when he literally chased me into a ditch before he ran away. (On the same route, I had a dog that chased me for six miles while I was running. He quit barking after 500 meters, and then just ran alongside me until I got home.)

If you have a leash law, tie the dog up at your house and then call animal control to come get him. The owner will have to explain how the dog got off his leash and may have to pay a fine.

As for dogs aggressively chasing while on the bike, the bike pump across the nose will work wonders too. Just don't drop it.

Anyone tried ultrasonic repellent devices? Ones that emit ultrasound which we cant hear, but it say on the webpage that it will repell any dog or animal within a 6 m radius?

I'm sure pepper spray works, just this is much more cleaner, reusable, and also no targeting is needed.

Be aware that none of the suggestions with the possible exception of the .45 ACP will work every time.  Some dogs will respond to yelling or a squirt of water, others don't.  I know first hand that if a dog is truly vicious and is determined to get you, pepper spray/mace will not deter them.  If your route takes you past an aggressive dog, put your ego in your back pocket and change your route.

Having been bike commuting for about 2 years I see dogs on my route every week. Most just want to play on my route but I can usually scare them away by slowing down slightly and tell them to go home. It usually works. The few times a more aggressive friend has tried to say hi I was able to avoid contact and outrun them or I have occassionally thrown my water bottle. it did not hurt the dog seriously and allowed me to get far enough ahead when they were startled that they just stop and give up. Also on the way home I was able to grab my bottle both times. Take it home and clean it and it's good as new.

I am curious to try the dog treat tact though, see how effective that is... Spray is your best bet I am guessing still. more reliable than the water/water bottle and safer for everyone around than a .22 (or any other sort of gun.) Good luck!

Very true. The water squirt has never worked for me, it just slows ME down. Halt has worked a few times, other times it didn't. I try to factor in the conditions. If he's standing in the road ahead of me, I'll turn around. If he's at the top of a hill and I'm gassed, I'll head back down. If he's BEHIND me and it's relatively flat, he's going to have to earn it. Getting nipped is bad but getting one under your wheel is not great either. I know you aren't supposed to "run" from predators, but I would hate to get off my bike intentionally.

1. squirt your water bottle at the dog

2. get off and scare the dog

3. kick the heck out of it

4. if attacked file a lawsuit against the irresponsible owners.

The worst is when you are uphill crankn' away and THEN the huge barking, savage, and angry beast muscles its way from under a fence - I have seen a dog run after me miss me by 1 foot or two and then nearly get smashed by a car - I yelled at the owners - lounging on their lawn to tie their dog up.

As far as dog protecting "their territory" I say tie up your ANIMAL there are people (including mom's pushing strollers) who would like to use the roads with out the prospect of being mauled by your dog "that does not bite".

 >>>>>>....sigh....rant over......

x2 - I carry a 4 oz. bottle of ammonia in the small bag under the seat. It's the type bottle that eye wash or eye irrigation comes in.  It has a flip top and a small hole that will squirt a nice stream of ammonia for about 10 -15 feet with deadly accuracy.  I live in a small town and ride country roads every day with lots of yard dogs along the way.  Some places have 3 or 4 big dogs that love to chase cars, bikes, runners or anything that moves.  The only ones that I have trouble with now are the un-baptised ones.  One good shot in the face with a good strong solution of ammonia will take their breath away for a few minutes and will stop them in their tracks and have the dog doing flips in the ditch and pawing his nose off trying to get that awful stuff off of him.  I always yell (No - No) in a very stern voice just before I hit them with the ammonia spray.  Trust me,  they will always remember that voice and while they may bark at you from their yard or ditch, they certainly don't want to get in range of that spray ever again.  If they do happen to forget,  I keep a 48 oz. bottle for many future re-fills.

One of this would be more then enough:

http://www.tbotech.com/telescopicbaton.htm

Like a last line of defense, rabid dog or not, I believe a firm smack across the nose of the dog would stop it in its tracks. It might seem a bit over the edge, but I'll take my health over a concern for the dog that's attacking any day. I got bitten by a dog, and next time, if any more tries thats, the dog will be the one knocked down. It's all nice and good to like animals, I like them very much myself, but we still have to remind ourselves they are afterall still animals, and they have predatory insticts that will kick in in unappropriate situations if theirs owner did not train them well. If and when the animal gets out of control of it's owner, and tries to hurt me, then all rules are called off, it's all about survival, because it is then that the line between nuisance and life threat has been crossed.

I have had one chase me while I was running (didn't take long to catch me), but I yelled SCAT at him as loud as I could and he went the other way.  Either (1) it scared him, (2) he thought I was special needs since I apparently used the international word for getting a cat to leave, (3) my boney legs didn't provide an adequate enough meal.

The scariest thing I ever come up while on the bike was a deer.  Obviously, he didn't chase me, but I didn't see him until later.  I just heard a freight train moving through the woods and I thought that either a wolfhound was after me or I was being chased by an evil woods haint.

I have been chased by about every kind of dog you think of, Some wanted to take your leg off, while others just wanted to play. For me yelling at them suprises them enough to get clear of them. The one time I was actually bitten, I never saw the dog. All I heard was the clicking sound of toenails about a second before this doperman sunk his teeth into my calf. I yelled at him and he let go. Then I noticed his partner was coming up on the other side to take his shot at me. I stopped and got off my bike and got it between me and them. I started yelling at the top of my lungs and finally the owner came out and called them off. Then she said the classic line, "They won't bite." I yelled back "they already have" as I showed her the blood running down my leg.

I used my cellphone and called the sheriff. A deputy must have been close by,because a squad car showed up in minutes. After he talked to me, he talked to the owner. He told her to keep the dogs locked up. She started to talk to talk back until the he reached for his gun, and said if she didn't, he wiould take care of it right now. That settled it. I went to the doctor and got the wounds taken care of and the billed was paid by the owner. I have not seen those dogs out since.

The last time I was chased by a dog I actually talked to him all sweet and was cheering for him to run faster to try and keep up with me (good thing I wasn't going uphill at the time). The dog started out acting all mean and stuff and by the time he got to me and heard me he just wanted to run as fast as I was riding. The dog got so distracted by me and in trying to keep up that he ran right into a mailbox. I almost crashed laughing so hard.
