Age Group Rank = 12/23
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:15 and ate a bowl of Cheerios & GoLean Crunch. Nibbled on a Marathon bar while I organized my race things. I usually do this the night before but I was too exhausted. I had been fighting a cold all week but I pushed on...
Event warmup:

Please! There was no warming up for this event. It was freezing. I spent the whole morning just trying not to turn blue. lol!
Swim
  • 29m 6s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was okay. I never felt like I got into a real groove. Everytime I took a breath it seemed I was surrounded by blue caps. I was really surprised to find out I was one of the first from our wave out of the water. I also learned that you don't wear dark tinted goggles on dark rainy days -- I couldn't see anything!
What would you do differently?:

Clear goggles.
Transition 1
  • 03m 40s
Comments:

Could not get my wetsuit off. I stood, I sat, I stood...ugh. FINALLY it came off. Debated about wearing arm warmers and/or a jacket. I opted to wear the just the jacket and socks (thank goodness).
What would you do differently?:

Consider getting a new wetsuit.
Bike
  • 1h 25m 49s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Get the cheese - 'cause here comes the whine! This sucked! I was actually having a great ride up until about mile 13.

Then I start to get a shooting pain in parts unmentioned thanks to a varicose vein. This causes me to start wiggling around on my saddle trying to relieve the pain. All this did was lead to more pain. By trying to compensate for the pain in my vein my lower back started to spasm. By mile 18 I was in tears. I REALLY wanted to just pull over and lay down in the grass. But I didn't. I kept going...one mile at a time. I've never been so happy to see a transition in my life.
What would you do differently?:

I'm going to put my old Terry saddle back on and have adjustments done. I'm also considering surgery. :(
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

My husband said I looked pissed when I came into T2 (I was). Decided to keep the jacket on for the run and I'm glad I did. I was really comfortable temp-wise the whole run.
Run
  • 58m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

My run actually felt really good. I had hoped to keep my time under 1 hour and I did. My feet were frozen for the first half mile (that hurts!) I felt really good when I hit the first aid station at mile 1. I paced with another runner until mile 2 but then she fell back. At mile 3 I picked up another pacer behind me and we basically pushed each other through the rest of the HILLY course. At every mile marker I kept thinking "I'm going to cramp up at any minute" but I didn't. By the time I hit mile 4 I knew I had made it.

It was great to feel so strong after my bike ordeal (or because of my bike ordeal?).
Post race
Warm down:

I immediately started stretching. I also greabbed some red beans and rice (yumm!), water and endurox. I used the long walk back to the car as my main warm-down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pain. But I guess that's not suppose to be a limiting factor in triathlon. ;)

Event comments:

It was my first Oly and I'm glad it's behind me. :)

YAY! Way to gut through the painful bike. And I know about uncomfortable saddle issues!!!! Ugh! But that's awesome--the next Oly you do will be so much better--just due to weather alone!!!!!

great race. I have been there before on the bike and it is a tough place. You ran well considering how you felt on the bike.

Congrats on your first Oly!  Sorry about the pain, but glad your worked through it! If all goes well I'll be there next season.  Got the bikes and working on the swim now.  Loving the tri-life.

Awesome way to perservere on the bike!!  You finished a difficult race under bad weather conditions and in an awesome time.

Great job!  I'm sorry that we didn't get to meet.  It was hectic at best.

Kudos for sticking to it! You had a great race....despite having a painful bike leg and the fact that you sounded like you swallowed a frog that morning I'm glad you felt better than you sounded! It was nice to see you and your SO again.
