Public Landing, Maryland

Maryland Coastal Bays Program
55F / 13C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 20m 19s
Overall Rank = 4/105
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/24
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30 and left for Public Landing from the B&B at 5:50. Ate my normal pre-race breakfast of a clif bar, and drank some propel. Got to the race pretty early and set-up near Dave, Brenda, and Glenn. Of course, Glenn had the best transition spot in the whole race!
Event warmup:

None. Just tried to stay warm.
Swim
  • 6h 38m
  • 880 yards
  • 45m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

5/313 overall. Good swim. Water was freezing cold. I knew who another fast swimmer was in my wave from my race last week so I got up nice and close to her. We were swimming next to each other for the first two buoys, where we got ahead of the rest of the group. I then eased off a bit so I could draft. It is harder to draft because she was weaving in and out of slower swimmers in the wave ahead of us. Otherwise that was a SMOKIN swim for me and I am pleased.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Guesstimate on time. Other than slipping up and trying to take my bike off the race before putting my shoes/helmet on, this was a good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Stay awake :)
Bike
  • 46m 20s
  • 15.2 miles
  • 19.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Hard course in that it was crazy windy. Pretty flat, but windy. This race was weird in that I never saw another female, and I passed 10+ males but only got passed by 2 males. I wasn't sure how far back in second I was. It turned out that I was ~40 secs behind after T1 and stayed about that time through the bike.
I pushed this portion of the race probably too hard. I was in upper Zone 4/Zone 5 for the whole race.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe pace myself better?
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Good transition. I saw the first female leaving as I came in. I knew I had some work to do in the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 24m 24s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Well I continued pushing this really hard. My first mile split was at 7:35, as was my second mile split. I saw Glenn and Dave and they looked really strong! At the turn around I saw that I probably wasn't going to catch the first girl, and that another one was gaining on me. There really wasnt anyhing left in me to run any faster. At this point my HR was averaging around 178 which is zone 5+. I turned the corner and finished, completely out of breath.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe too hard on the bike? Otherwise I think I gave it my all.

Event comments:

Great race. I really enjoyed it!

Congratulations...you had an awesome day!  That was definitely a fast swim you had and you were redlined on that run big-time.  Great way to end the season.  You picked up some serious hardware this year!

I'm sorry you didn't get a picture with the trash can...maybe next year.  It was a beauty.
