Raise the price of gas to $10 per gallon tomorrow and watch the used car lots fill up with them.  I work with a guy who drives a Ford F-350 dualie as a commute vehicle to work each day.  I can probably fit my car in the bed of his truck.

I just drove a work truck loaded with samples across the state.

I am looking forward to commuting in the scooter tomorrow morning.

F-350's have a place in the workplace but as a commute vehicle, well that's just not right. Besides I thought Viagra took care of those kinds of issues.

I feel like such a hypocrit when I drive my dad's SUV to school (to haul my stuff to college). I truly hate driving, and was perfectly happy when I lived in Europe to walk damn near everywhere. I would much much much rather ride my bike to wherever I need to go. This is the first year I've had my car (Concord) out here...and I think the same tank of gas has been in it for 3 weeks. I drive to go to work and then I come back. I only drive because the road my work is located on is absolutely NOT bike friendly. Those of you who live in columbus can attest to the insanity of some of the roads/traffic patterns here as well. Add to that the fact that I have to be there at 5 am, which would mean waking up at 3:30 to take meds, eat breakfast and ride there...and while I'd be all about that, it's dark and cold and damnit, I'm in college and I should be SLEEPING at 3:30am.

I have a Silverado 2500 4wd and I used it for Landscaping.  I don't use it for work anymore since I graduated from college, but it's paid off and can't afford to have a car payment now.  Even though gas is higher it's still cheaping than a car payment.  I only have a 8 mile commute, and in a couple of years I'll buy a bigger truck...just kidding...I'll buy an economical car but still keep my truck for camping and pulling my trailer.

i guess i'm the strange person here that enjoys driving.  I'm not talking dull, boring highway driving, but going back in the twisties.  Something that actually makes you have to downshift.

I personally feel that anyone can drive whatever the hell they want to.  It is a free country.  If you have the money, by all means go out and buy what you want.  I do find it a little stupid to own a hummer in the city, but hey...if you have the cash and are willing to put up with the hassle, then more power to you.

Bad drivers are bad drivers, regardless of their car.  Some of the worst drivers I've seen are in compact hybrids.  They act like they are doing such a (dis)service to the world that they deserve to own the road.  Those are the people that get hit by big trucks and then whine about safety.  If people would just learn to fricking drive and understand not every car drives the same, then we'd be okay.  Instead of teaching defensive driving, I say that before getting a license, everyone must go through two weeks at a good racing school.

People about gas prices aren't really .  They use it as an oppertunity to brag about their big car.

I drove a full size extended cab pickup for 11 years (and yes, I used it on my working farm, it had a hitch, four wheel drive for driving through the pasture and also in the 100+ inches of snow we get in the winter).  I miss that truck.    Let it go and got a small SUV when my husband got a Duramax Diesel pickup.

What I always hated was cars that drove like I was in a car.  Especially with a load, I always made sure to keep a clear distance between me and the car in front of me.  LOTS of car drivers think that is a space for them to squeeze into.  NO IT IS NOT!!  Then I had to slow down and back off from that car and so on and so on.  I'm sure semi truck drivers deal with this all the time.  Very frustrating in heavy traffic.

Okay, I don't "hate" people in general, even those who drive their Suburbans like sportscars and drive heavy-duty trucks to the nail salon... but my one personal peeve about large cars is when they pull ahead into the intersection and BLOCK THE VIEW.

Say I'm driving my small car down to the corner of the highway feeder. I want to turn right. I'm in the right lane. The light is red. Right turn -- legal as long as it's safe, right? So I stop at the line, look to the left for oncoming cars. BUT WAIT! JUST THEN, an oversized vehicle in the middle lane cruises up and stops with its enormous front end jutting 3 feet into the intersection! No way can I see over it to figure out if ANOTHER enormous vehicle is barreling down from the left at that point. So my only course of action is to wait for the behemouth to move or for the light to turn green. No right turn on red for me.

Sigh. This, or some variant, happens several times a day. Give the little people our sight lines, folks, that's all I ask.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Maybe I need a periscope?

a small car (yes, a well-maintained Mazda Protege it does get 30mpg, thanks for asking!)

trifocus - 2006-10-12 12:59 PM  to pull wood -J

O.k. I'm feeling like a 14 year old today AND this post is too serious...did he say he "pulls wood" with his truck? OUCH!!!!

On the topic, I bought a Tahoe, I'm 6'7" so the "little man's syndrome" is not an issue, and yes, I'm looking to sell it in the face of high gas prices. Anyone know of a dependable Civic or Accord I can buy? I love the Tahoe but it is fiscally irresponsible for my family. Wish me luck selling it and hopefully there is a 5' soccer mom who is gullible enough to buy it!

My husband keeps trying to get rid of my cute little car, which is too small for him, to get an SUV. I grew up in Utah, driven SUV's my entire driving life until I got my car 5 years ago. I live in Cali now and I don't want another gas guzzler, plain and simple. But I can't seem to convince him to find a hitch for my Audi so I can haul my dirtbike somehow. Wouldn't that be a sight? Anyway, I do need to borrow hubby's big duramax from time to time for Costco runs, etc. I think most families need to have at least one urban assault vehical to tow their dirtbikes, rock crawlers, trailers and what nots. Can't bash them all.

I bet many people look at us, wearing tight spandex shorts and running around the woods and frollicing around on our tiny tired bikes as "odd". I have "granola" friends who drive Hybrid cars but spend 6,000 minutes a month on their cell phones, who are not Vegan's, and who by almost evrything on eBay or online for their triathlon needs. Saying you have to "live in the country" to drive and SUV, to me, is like saying you have to be an "on-call Dr. to have a cell phone". Silly, sardonic and just plain wrong. Doesn't make a sense to me.

We can all throw stones at others we are jealous of, enveious to and wanting from. The plain truth is that what makes life so great is how different we all act, dress, etc. but how the same we really all are.
