Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel at 6:30, drove into Hartford, parked in my company's garage, and ran into Heidi (hdhtri) and her crew. Walked over to Bushnell park to see who else we could find before the race. Ran into Rob and Meredith, talked with them for a few, realized that I'd forgotten to bring a GU (oops), then walked to my building to use the bathroom because the porto line was crazy and the races were about to start.
Event warmup:

Stretched a little, then as I was waiting for the start I felt a tap on my shoulder and it was Dave (Pam's husband)! He and Ian decided to run the 5K while Pam was doing the half.

Comments:

Well, I was hoping for a new PB, and it didn't happen. I don't know why. I was amped this morning, feeling good, feeling prepared, then I went out and sucked. My heart rate was RIDICULOUS. I ran the whole race at LT. My feet felt ok, so I will not use that as an excuse. One thing I will say is that there were no mile markers on the course so it was hard to pace myself.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Found C and Meredith, sat in the bleachers and waited for the people doing the half to finish. My butt got cold and my hammies were starting to cramp so C and I moved down to the street to watch from there. Rob came by, then Pam, so we headed back up to the finish to see everyone. Baitboy (who will now be known as Bionic Bait Boy) and Heidi had also finished so I attempted to round everyone up for a pic, but Pam was busy talking to a non BT person (is that allowed??) so I finally took one of Rob, Dan, and Heidi. Then it was off for pancakes :).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure. Most of my runs for the past few months have been slow, so maybe I've forgotten how to kick it into high gear. I don't know.

Event comments:

My only complaint is the lack of mile markers on the course. I think they did this on purpose because we shared our course with the half and full marathons, so they probably didn't want to confuse those runners.

Mmmm. Pancakes.

Good race, don't beat yourself up about not making a PR.  When you do set a new mark, it'll be that much more satisfying.

Polly, you did great! Remember that you have been working on stretching your runs out to longer distances and not necessarily focusing on speed so that may be the reason for not getting faster just yet. Once you get a good base going, you can start to incorporate some speedwork.

Then you'll be seeing some new PRs!!

It was cold out there this morn!! I think that didnt help my heartrate either.

Great race this morning!  As Pam said you've been focussing on longer stuff in prep for next weekend rather than the shorter faster runs.  While no PB 9can't get them every time we race) still a great run and think of it as speed work for next week's fun!

Yo, Polly... As everyone above said, don't be so hard on yourself... You ran a great race, especially since your focus has been on LSRs.

Rest up, get your short/fast runs in this week, then have a good 10 miler in Mystic--That's what you've been working toward!
