Total Time = 3h 34m 6s
Overall Rank = 24/109
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/10
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:45am. Ate a few bagels and drank some gatorade. Surfed BT.
Event warmup:

Raining, just tried to stay dry. Rain continued for maybe the first 5 miles.
Run
  • 3h 34m 6s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

With all of the up and down hills it is very difficult to run an even pace. Therefore, I was only taking splits every 5 miles so the hills would be averarged out. After the first 5 mile split (37:56 = 7:35) I knew I was going too fast and should slow down. Tried to slow down but my 10 mile split (38:27 = 7:41) was too fast as well. There is an overall elevation loss for the first 14 miles. When I hit the 14 mile mark and started to climb back towards town I made up my mind that I would force myself to slow down. Ran the 15th mile in 8:01, this is right were I should have been from the start. Overall my 15 mile split (38:48 = 7:46) was too fast but I was starting to correct this. By mile 17 I was no longer forceing myself to slow down, my slow pace was the fastest I could go. At 20 miles (40:55 = 8:11) my legs hurt and the wheels were begining to fall off. I wanted to walk but I forced myself to make it to the top of the last big hill at mile 23. Mile 23 came and the death march started. Mile 23 and 24 were ugly, went into a walk 50 steps run 500 steps mode. At mile 25 (46:49 = 9:22) I walked again for about 0.2 miles and then told myself to run the last mile in (last 1.2 mile = 11:13 = 9:21). Finished.
What would you do differently?:

Train more and not be stupid with my pace.

Post race
Warm down:

Changed out of my wet clothes and turned the truck heater up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A hilly course, 20 extra pounds, and a lack of good training.

Event comments:

Even though this is a small race BBRC gives $8,000 back to the local cross country teams that run the aid stations.

Way to go T!  After the weeks of good weather, I was bummed to see the rain Sunday morning!  Too bad the race wasn't on Saturday in the sun!  Maybe I'll see you there next year.  Oh, wait a minute, your pace is WAY faster than mine (even your slow pace) so maybe I'll see you at the start next year!

Good job T.  I wish I could be stupid with my pace and run anything in the 7s

This should set you up to begin training very nicely.

Very good marathon.  Darn good time carrying that 20 pound handicap.

How are you feeling Monday morning?
