Pre-race routine:

I had to use this race as part of my HIM training, so I got up at 4:45am and rode my bike for 45min in the dark around Manhattan Beach. When I got back, I ate breakfast with my parents and we drove to Long Beach. The drive was terrible and I completely underestimated how bad the traffic would be to get to the race, grrr....
Event warmup:

Considering it took twice as long as anticipated to get to the race, my warm-up consisted of going to the bathroom and walking with my parents to the start (7 minutes after the gun went off). We weren't the last ones to cross the start- woo-hoo! We got to start the race together, and they were very excited to be there.

Comments:

My legs felt great the whole time. I had told myself to not run as fast as I could- it was supposed to be a training run- but once I got on the course, I took off. Since I started waaaaay at the back, I had a TON of people to pass, but it was kind of like a video game- dodging in and out of people. It took almost 6 miles to get to my paced people, but I still ended up passing people till the finishline. Good ego boost, I suppose! Unfortunately, since I started so late, I ended up running 13.43 miles in 1:40:17 (according to garmin), so my 'real' pace was 7:27min/mile, even though that's not my chip time. Oh well! The only reason that really matters is because I 'could've' gotten 5th place, 32nd for women and also a PR, but I'm a dumbass and didn't get to the race on time, so I lose! I know I got a PR for myself, even though it won't be 'official.' More importantly, I got to start with my parents on their first race ever.

My parents successfully finished their first half marathon walking at a pace of 16:35min/mile and had a finishing time of 3:37:17 :) I'm so proud!
What would you do differently?:

Never do a race in LA again....and get to the race 2 hours before it starts. Oops! Good thing I screwed up this race and not my HIM in 2 weeks.
Post race
Warm down:

Ha! Not much of a warm-down. After I drank some water and ate a banana, I just happened to find my parents on the course at mile 6, so I walked with them for 1.5miles, then ran back to the finish area. After walking another 1.5miles to the car to get all our stuff, I got back in time to see them 'run' across the finish. They're so cute! After that, we walked around the Long Beach aquarium. In total, my legs feel like they did about 20miles today!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Having to go sideways more often than forwards for the first 3 miles :) I ran about as fast as I could, considering I had already rode for 45min in the morning.

Event comments:

The only thing I would tell the RD is to print in big BOLD letters that you need to plan at least 2 hours to get to the race.

Great race and report. It is a bummer that it took you so long to get to the race but don't disregard all races in LA just because of this one bad experience. I always find running races much more frustrating to get to than triathlons because there are just so many more people at running races. Glad to read your parents had a great race as well. Great job getting the ride in before the race. See you in a couple of weeks in Arizona.

Smokin' half mary!  Too bad you got there late, but you still had a good fast run.  Passing people like that is fun.  Good ego and mental boost!

Helluva job! NICE!

Great job!  Considering you were late you ran a great pace.  Good thing we learn from our mistakes.  I bet you will be 2 hours early for your HIM!

Great job considering the hassles.   Shoulda just rode your bike from MB to LB and had your parents drive you home

I totally was going to do that! I was trying to find a route to take, but since I don't know LA at all, I was really hesitant to just head out in the dark at 5 in the morning hoping to get to Long Beach eventually! I liked riding on the bike path to Santa Monica though- it's really nice!

It was amazing to see my parents get into it! The best part was when they told me I inspired them- aww!!!

Hey chiquita, great job on the run! Even with the crowds and late start, your time is solid. You are quick! Congrats on the PR and getting your parents involved in such a big event. Your family's a buncha studs.

Congratulations! I would have taken all the traffic woes to have had as great a race as you! I was right there at the gun start and it still took me over a minute to get to the actual starting line with all the participants.
