I know its early (just over 9 mos out) but has anybody started to get into their base training? I just began but I'm getting into it slowly. Some people say that you will burnout if you start this soon but we'll see, coach knows best. Also I dont want to give up these gorgeous fall days, bc I know that the winter will become monotnous (spelling?)

I asked my good friend from Woodstock NY, a five time IMLP finisher who weighs in at 260 pounds and is 6'1". He is the Upstate Team in Training Cylcing Coach. At IMLP 2006 he finsihed 2nd Clydesdale. He usually does a 11 hour Ironman. A MONSTER.

We are both doing IMFL 2006. I did IMAZ and IMLP this year and he did IMCD and IMLP this year. I have done the Great Floridan, SOS, IMLP, IMAZ.

He asked me tonight if it's ok that since 07/25/06 his longest run has been 6 miles, his longest bike 20 miles and his longest swim 750 yards.

I said, "oh boy" we are in for it now at IMFL. We both laughed and decided to have another beer.

You can never start training to late or taper too early he said to me!

Hey

i'm working out at a low/medium level right now (check my logs). I'm planning on building core strength and lifting for another two months and then getting into some long base in January. this is my first ironman so take my experience for what it's worth (aaaalmost zero)

Well, I'm working out and hoping that I'm building a solid base for LP next year.  But I'm trying to stay focused on other goals for now (set some PRs in running races and lift my power output on the bike, for example).  I expect that I'll keep my "LP-specific" plan on the shorter side (12-16 weeks probably).

I am doing LP as my first IM, and I am starting my official training for LP later in the winter.

This month I am focusing on increasing my running base while getting as many long bike rides in as possible. I am trying to get as much base training in running/biking this fall/early winter as possible since I have the most fitness to gain in these areas.

To battle burnout, I am "forcing" myself to a few periods of 2-3 rest days in a row (at least once a month). I have found that a few days completely off make me much more motivated to train!

My first IM will be LP and training started beginning October under guidance of a trainer who has successfully coached a group of people through this IM for a few years now. She has started us a month earlier than last year when she started Nov to take the pressure off of holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Although I seem to be doing a fair amount of hours already, a lot of it is strength work and drills at the moment. The long stuff will come next year.

Good luck and have fun

With LP 9 months out, now is the time to exercise, have fun, do some exercise that is not s/b/r specific.  You will have plenty of time for more formal training.  Why start "base" training now when it is really way too early to even think in those terms. I will "start" my more specific training for my next Ironman around June which is 4 months out...

I would work on my body comp. Try to have your weight right before you start your "official" training. If you have a weakness - swimming or lack of power on the bike then I would make that your most important focus during the winter.

Matt,

Since I'm not doing an IM this year i don't know about all that. I wil tell you that I'l lbe riding Harriman starting in late March in prep for the killer Endurosport HIM there in May. Then, I will continue to ride Harriman so I can kick a$$ at Timberman in August. The STer's that ride there say it's harder than LP. Don't think i'll ever do the 8 loops but I know 4 (56 mile) is about the hardest ride I've ever done. So this year we will definately ride together, even if I have to come pull you out of the precinct! Smile

Do some unstructured training until the end of November and you can kick off your IMLP on December. That’s the plan I followed for the guys I trained last year and it worked out pretty well. We had enough time to work on their base and limiters early in the plan and plenty of time for hard and long quality sessions later. We even did an IMLP training camp 6 weeks away LP and finished with an 18 day taper time. If you have questions feel free to PM

Yep. I have. I'm essentially working up to 13 miles running, 60 mi cycling (indoors, on a trainer), and 2400 m swimming for long workouts, with the appropriate weights, etc. for supporting workouts. Once there (I'm at 9mi running, 40 cycling, and 1600 swim right now), I'll maintain until February/March when the real base begins. I figure by doing that, I don't burn out this time, and I impact my family as lightly as possible.
