Pre-race routine:

Being out of town, I was ill-prepared for the cooler weather that came in on Friday night. I woke up at 3:45am, central time and went outside. It was 48 degrees. I decided to go to the 24-hour Walmart and pick up a pullover windbreaker. Found one for $13 that worked out fine. Snice it was so early, I decided to stop in at Waffle House and have a couple of eggs, grits and toast for my breakfast.
Event warmup:

At 5:45, I rode my bike from the condo to the race location which was 1 mile away. This loosened up my legs a bit. When I got there, I set up my TA and then jogged around the parking lot. On the way to the swim start, I got in the water and swam about 100 yards.
Swim
  • 12m 3s
  • 400 yards
  • 03m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was not good. I am a lot slower in the open water than in the pool. As Neal says there is no place to rest in the open water swim.
What would you do differently?:

Need much more swim training. More hours in the pool/lake.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

The transition splits were included in the bike split.
What would you do differently?:

Get faster in the TAs.
Bike
  • 36m 14s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike ride was good. I felt better about it. The race folks did a good job of keeping traffic at bay.
What would you do differently?:

More training
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

There again, TAs were not seperated. Did ok, though.
What would you do differently?:

Get faster
Run
  • 46m 34s
  • 3 miles
  • 15m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I have got to improve my running. This is the main area I am going to focus my attention on for this winter. I need to shave off 20 minutes or more from this run. Shin splints on my right leg were almost unbearable. I tried to run through the pain but it was just too much. I ran about 1/3 of the course.
What would you do differently?:

Become a runner.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, found the massage guy and was first in line to see him. He worked on my shins for about 20-30 minutes.

Race had red beans and rice for recovery food. Someone said that was the best combination of protein and carbs for recovery. They were good.

Met some new folks but didn't see any BTers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overweight and inadequate training. Going to work on these during the winter and see what happens.

Event comments:

Good race, may have to make this an annual event. Destin is such a great place to spend a weekend.

Great job, Mike!  I really admire you for getting through the run w/ the shin splints.  I know those must hurt!!  You are also awesome for doing 2 tris 2 weekends in a row

Awesome job, Mike!  So glad you enjoyed your tri this past weekend - It is really a show of your strength that you did 2 back-to-back weekends of tri'ing.

Sounds like Destin was a fun tri.  You did great and are on your way to the top!  Great job!

Great job!  I kinda wish I'd done this one now too!  Maybe we can get some club track workouts organized, I HAVE TO work on my run too!

Nice race - I'm so impressed that you did 2 races back-to-back! Open water swimming seems to get better each time you race, so the more races you do the better you'll get. Great job on the bike leg and way to hang in on the run. Post-race massage sounds like an excellent idea, I've never taken advantage of those, but maybe I'll have to do that next time. You're doing a great job - you're going to get stronger with each race!

Red beans and rice sounds good.  I will have to remember that.  Good race and improvement over your first.  Doing 2 races in 2 weekends is tough.

Good Job and thanks for the RR.  I didn't know there was a tri there, now I do, and it sounds like a good family vacation.

Two tri's in two weekends.  That's pretty hard core.  Be careful and make sure to recover.

Good Luck and Have Fun!
