Pre-race routine:

6:15am Cranberry breakfast pie, orange smoothies and homemade whole wheat bread (bed & breakfast). Kelli (B&B hostess) was up early making breakfast for 7 of us running the half marathon/marathon. Couldn't ask for a better breakfast, and since it was 2 hrs & 45 min from the race start, didn't worry a whole lot. Got out to Eric's van, and the front right tire was flat. Kelli let us borrow her son's car to get to the bus pickup. Picked up Steve at the Best Western, parked and easily onto the bus.

Greatest part of the bus ride was watching the marathon buses take a left turn half-way to the half-mary start. Scotty, Eric, Steve and I grinning from ear to ear knowing we didn't need to run a marathon today!
Event warmup:

None. Sat in the 'warming house' waiting for the race to start. Lines to the porta-johns not long at all.

Comments:

Race start a little crowded. Wanted to be at about an 8:30 pace at the start, but ended up running the 1st mile in 9 because of the 'traffic.'

Spent the next 4 miles trying to get back to target pace. Don't think I ever got to my target pace (8:10), but then again, I didn't really care. It was beautiful run and a great weekend with my wife and friends.
What would you do differently?:

More intensity on longer runs. Kept up on my speedwork and tempo training, but my long runs weren't long enough...
Post race
Warm down:

Finished hard. Grabbed a space blanket and some water and cookies. Changed into dry clothes, and waited for Eric to come in...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training...

Event comments:

Great race! Will do it (or the full) next year...

That sounds like a great race!  Wisconsin in October is really pretty.  Great job on the pace, even though it wasn't quite your goal.  Sometimes it's more fun just to go out and enjoy yourself.

The Bed & Breakfast you stayed at sounds great!  What was the name of it?  I've been looking for a place to send my parents to for the weekend.

Yeah, it seems as I get older, it's more about enjoying the journey...(or maybe it's just a cop out for not hitting my targets!  )

So what's your new half-mary target (my PR is 1:47)?

It was 'tweener' temperature...between 36 and 40.  Really tough to regulate temperature.  Had on a thin Thermax hat, long sleeve Coolmax shirt, running jacket, shorts and running pants.  Legs were fine, but had to take off the hat and jacket several times, then it would get too cool and I'd put them back on.  Probably increased my time about 2 minutes, causing me to miss getting a PR.  kidding...missed target due to lack of training...
