Subject: Early season training camp/vacation

For those of you that don't know, I have IMAZ coming up in April of next year, so it is training over the winter months for me.  Here is what I am now thinking....how about an early season training camp or just a get-away trip to warmer weather for a few days to do some long rides, runs and even some swimming.  But the question is...where???

I don't really want to fly with my bike (I am doing that for IMAZ) so the location would need to be in driveable distance even if it took a full day to drive there.

  • Warm weather in mid to late February
  • Good bike routes
  • Open water swimming???
  • Good running routes

Anyone else want to join?  Any ideas???  Please help!!!

Pensacola/Destin/Panama City Florida sounds like your only viable options.

I am actually pondering a similiar 'vacation' in Feb. to tune up.

I have thought of that...doing the long drive down for the Gasparilla Half Mary then training for most of the week then heading up to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras Half.

But I am also considering going to Austin and doing the same as above with the Austin half and the Mardi Gras.

P'cola is a good option too, but it can be cold at that time of year.  Might be too chancy.

Keep them coming folks.....thanks!

You're not going to be able to drive far enough to escape the "can be cold." I've seen it snow in Austin, late February (two nights before the marathon), for example.

We'll always have room down here.

Head south as far as you can and pray for good weather.  You can always find roads to ride and run.  The big question is finding a good place to swim.  Most hotels have small pools.  However there a a lot of YMCA's, Gyms and public pools.

Maybe fly somewhere and find a LBS that will rent & fit a bike for you there?  Find the LBS before hand of course

I know you said you don't want to fly but, having been to one of their camps, I'd say this is the way to go!
