OK, some of you guys have been doing this a while, whether you'd admit it or not you're progressing beyond beginner status, those bodies are firming up, shaping up nicely. What's the best compliment you've received as a result of those many hours of hard training? I don't know if this is the best, but it was the funniest, and I DID take it for a compliment. I was riding in a century a couple weeks ago, and(slowly) passed a couple other guys who were riding together: Guy#1: Look at the calves on that guy! Guy#2: Man those aren't calves, those are cows! OK, I guess you had to be there. |

Master 2447 Marietta, Ga | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? I was biking in Destin last weekend, and came up to a stop light. This elderly lady in her white Lincoln pulled up and had a cigarrette hanging out the corner of her mouth (you know, with one eye half shut cause of the smoke). Out her open drivers side window, she said, "Sonny, you sure can see the muscles in your legs". |

OK, I guess you had to be there. LOL!! That is hysterical! Yeah, you're right. It's nice to get compliments that reflect the hard work you put in. After my last race my wife told me "you looked REALLY strong running into the finish chute today." Made my whole day. I've gotten comments about my quads and calves too...makes the hard work a little easier doesn't it? |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? One day on a training ride, I caught up to a 20-something woman. We rode together for a couple miles, chatting. As we came to an intersection and were about to take different routes, she said to me, "I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you have the greatest looking legs I have ever seen on a man!" This 56 year old just felt like he was 25! Max |

Elite 3235 San Diego | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? I have also had comments on my calves and quads (pictures to folow Type A ). I don't know if this counts as a compliment as a result of my training, but after a race last season I was chillin with my friends and this girl Suzana came up to me and said "Do you remember me? I replied I did (she was racing in the kids Triathlon a few months back) She said "You have totally inspired me! You told me I was good enough to do anything I want to do in this sport. I thought about it and I want to be the youngest person to finish an Ironman." I laughed and my friends gave me a hard time because she should find a better role model, but this last spring she was the youngest person to race in the California Half Ironman (illegally) and she is thinking about doing an Ironman in 2005 or 2006. I am glad that what I had to say would motivate someone like that, so I would have to say that was the greatest compliment I have ever recieved. Tom |

I think the best compliment I got wasn't about my physical appearance - though my sister's did ask me to drop trau at my b-day party to show off my quads. The best compliment was "I admire your dedication, it inspires me". I like knowing that what I am doing is making the people around me think about their lifestyles. |

, Alabama | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? The best compliment I got came as a postcard in the mail, advertising a local tri-store. This store is the title sponsor to many local sprint tri's that I do. The compliment was that on the picture side of the postcard was a swimmer, a biker and a runner. The swimmer and the biker were both me, in a tri I had done a few months previously! What a shock when I saw that! I showed all my friends. Sharon |

Extreme Veteran 434 Orangeville, Ontario | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? By far the best compliment I have ever received was yesterday. After my race I was working in the transition area while the pros were warming up. Simon Whitfield came up and asked, "How was your race?" "Fine thanks" I said " Any tips for the bike course, you look like a strong biker,” he said!! Just imagine, a year and a half ago I was 80lbs heavier and living a very unhealthy lifestyle and now I'm told that I look like a biker by an Olympic athlete gold medalist!! How cool is that!! Champion 6786 Two seat rocket plane | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? My best compliment is laced with irony and, on the surface seems a bit half-assed. It worked out like this: I got out and lowered myself into the program pool to stretch a bit before showering off. The mom was nearby and she asked me how many laps I swam, and I told her 40. Her reaction was priceless... "(blink, blink) 40 laps....you must not smoke" Funny what comes into people minds and when. The irony is that ten years age I smoked 2 packs of Camels a day, and as recently as two years ago I was dealing with the fact that cigarettes really are addictive, and addiction means that you are ALWAYS an addict. So, no... I must not smoke. |

Veteran 175 Albury, Oz | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? I still brag about this one! I am a non talented sportsperson that Just Does It against all the genetic hurdles that I have been lumbered with. As a 40 something Mum I entered the school fun run and did pretty well (oh, okay I won but it was not a big field). Another Dad who happens to be an ex-World Champion triathlete was at the finish line cheering on his wife - yelling "Well done! First Mum home!" and I said "Hang on - what am I?" and he said........... "You're not a Mum runner, you're an athlete". A World Champion called ME an ATHLETE!!!! I have always said "I am not a triathlete...I do triathlons. No one will EVER call me an athlete!" So, there you go. He then continued to say that I would be in the top 1% of women the same age in our community for fitness. I spend my whole time grizzling about how it sucks at the back of the field and you know I guess he is probably right! Mind you I still won't call myself the "A" word ;-) Deidre |

Champion 4902 Ottawa, Ontario | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? The very best compliment I ever received and the very best day of my life was when I went for a bike ride in the Gaitneaus with my step-daughter about 7 years ago. We were doing a long looping ride around Meech Lake and at one point during the course, she pulled up alongside me and said: "wow, you have amazing calves for an old guy!" Some guys might have gotten insulted, but I took it for what it was worth, a high form of praise coming from a very loving 18 year step-daughter. |

Expert 948 Mount Vernon, Iowa | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? The best compliment I've ever gotten - to this day - is what my high school tennis coach said about me. There was some college scout visiting our practice one day and the coach was pointing out the members of the varsity and talking about our strengths and weaknesses. I came running by, doing my daily laps, and he pointed to me as I got close and said "Now this one's a natural athlete." It was the first time it had occurred to me that I was an athlete, let alone a natural. It made a major difference in my life to be able to see myself that way, through the eyes of someone I respected. |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? While swimming laps in the pool at the gym I was approached by the guy in the lane next to me... Asked me to join him and his workout group, as I was the "fastest woman he's seen in the pool!" Later found out this guy is a 9x (at the time, now a 10x) Ironman and Hawaii qualifier! Yikes! Made my day, though. |

Elite 2468 Racine, WI | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? This isn't related to my triathlon training, but a thirtysomething guy who had seen me lifting in the gym day in and day out told me a few weeks ago that I'm his inspiration to get healthy. Since I'm a fitness instructor and personal trainer, it sure is nice to know that I'm motivating someone, even if I'm not trying. It doesn't hurt that the guys have started whistling at me from thier cars while I'm running again though.. Edited by CindyK 2004-08-02 10:18 AM |

My favorites are: 1) a friend of mine told me after losing 15 lbs "You know, you never looked fat to me and you don't look skinny now. You just look.... so strong." 2) I was joking with my sister about someone being afraid of my "guns". She took me seriously and said "Yeah, you do have some f@#^ing huge arms." :-) |

Master 1275 Sonoma County, CA | Subject: RE: What's the best compliment you've received? I've received a few about my body...being more toned, looking more healthy, etc. But the best had to be related to my outlook on life and the new sense of peace and contentment I've found since I started "tri'ing" Granted, I've had a few other lifestyle changes that have something to do with it....but training and participating in triathlons have given me a new self confidence that people are noticing..... "You look so happy" "I've never seen you look so relaxed" "You have a new self confidence about you" "Your outlook on life has completely changed and is so postiive. I truly believe when you say you want to do something that you will do it." Comments like that I know are related to this great adventure called "Triathlon" Edited by crpadiem 2004-08-02 2:19 PM |
