Subject: Can a TOTAL newbie bike 56kms (89miles)?
Hi guys

I'm a TOTAL newbie to cycling (just bought my bike, did my first ride last week and had a sore bum for two days after riding 15kms)

HOWEVER....there is a charity ride that is 56kms with heaps of breaks, snack-stops, first aiders on hand that is next sunday (Nov 5th) and I really want to do it. Do you think I should? Its for a really good cause and I really want to, but I just don't know if I "can".....

I come from a running background, so this cycling thing hurts even though I can run pretty well!

Your thoughts/advice appreciated!

Janine

56 kilometers = 34.8 miles

And yes, you can do it. Charity rides are much slower than competitive riding.

You should have no problem actually reaching the distance but your butt and other unmentionables will not like you. For newbies it's the seat that gets them not the legs. Get the most padded shorts you can, stand up on the pedals when you can and plan to stand at work on MondayWink

Have a great time, you'll be amazed at how much fun you'll have riding with a group.

Have a great time. I find I eat way too many cookies at these things. And take the advice from above, make sure to stand in your seat often or you're going to be sore, especially if you're riding a tri bike and you're not used to the feel (and the aerobars) yet.

Stay at a comfortable pace and use lots and lots of BodyGlide, Chamois Cream, or whatever's your personal lubricant of choice!!

You will have a sore @ss but that's just your body talking back, telling you what a jerk you were for not breaking her in gradually ;-) Having respect for your own body is something to ponder....

With your running background you should have no problem going the distance. A sore butt doesn't last forever.

Enjoy the ride.

More padding is not necessarily better. You'll be fine. It's not that long at all

Thanks for all your support and advice...I'm just looking at it as a fun day and hopefully my body will recuperate later on in the week - luckily I have a outdoors job so I don't get to sit down that much anyway! But I think Monday will be a killer at work!!

Getting properly fit on the bike is just as important as putting in the miles. If you are not fit properly on the bike, that is just as likely to cause soreness as not being in cycling shape. Find a Serotta bike fit technician in your area.
