Well I was all set to run my first half marathon this weekend in Detroit, and I guess someone had other plans. I had been looking forward this race for some time.... 2 years ago when I started running, I came and ran the relay with some people. It was the biggest event I had been in, and the atmosphere was so fun and inspiring to a new runner, that I told myself I would be back to do the half, and eventually full.

So Saturday Im eating some pasta for dinner. I put a little alfredo sauce on it just for a little flavor (this is a typical pre race meal for me, you know nothing new) and then I decide that im still a little hungry after. So I go for a bowl of cereal. I thought to myself as Im eating it, this tastes a little funny after eating alfredo, but I finish the small bowl anyways.

2am, stomach cramps from hell. About every 5 minutes I would have a spasm and be hunched over in knots. So 5am comes, the spasms are down to about every 15-30 min, and I had to make a decision, race time 7:15, will I be good enough to race. Its about a hour drive from home and had people coming to watch. So I get up, try to get around, hunched over again. A stomach ache, I have dealt with that before, but balled up in pain, I decided to call it. In that condition it would have taken me as long to run the 1/2 as a typical full marathon. I knew that running and tris had become a big part of my life, but i think it was at that moment, having so much difficulty in not running one of the races I had been looking forward to since I started running, that I realized how much its made a impact on my life. Im still bummed today.. but Vegas 1/2, here I come in a month! ANd always check the milk

Sorry to hear about your trouble. That said, this is supposed to be fun. They are not handing out medals for those who endured the most hardship while racing. Race when you feel good. A little off is of course ok, but don't make finishing the race at all cost a goal. DNS is not a badge of shame, just common sense. Do review your food intake carefully, no random eating 24 hours before the race.

yeah that was why I was most upset at myself, it was my own doing.. while nothing that I ate Saturday was out of the ordinary, I dont know why I didnt do my usual anal thing of checking the milk. Even if the date is fine, i normally smell it just because you never know.. but nope, not this time.

Yup...happened to me in July.  Went out to eat at a BBQ place the night before a race and was up most of the night with cramps.  Got up at 5am and called it since I was still sick.  I chalked it up to the idea that I wasn't supposed to race that day for whatever reason.

DNS > DNF when you are injuired or sick. there are always other races.

The idea of the saying DFL > DNS > DNS because of people who chick out basicly. I DNS more than DNFed so that is good. I only DNF once and that was because I was limping at mile 5 out of 31 miles running.

night of the race is most scary because of things like that happening to you.
