Age Group Rank = 27/59
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 and had Begal with BB. Bottle of Gatorade endurance and water. Had a gel right before I went into the swim.
Event warmup:

Just a little stretching and thats it.
Swim
  • 35m 48s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was what I expected, I was a little slow as I have not swam in the last three weeks at our training lake. There was one guy that kept grabbing and that got stopped real fast. Found a lot of open water and no real feet to draft of. Happy with swim and fist swim in a wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Do more swims leading up to the race. Just could not get to the lake with work.
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

Thought I was a lot faster with this. Did have to run a lot futher and I stoped to put socks on.
What would you do differently?:

Goa little faster.
Bike
  • 2h 41m 40s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.78 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was great, fast course and new there were going to be some fast times out there. I was doing great until about mile 48 and the body started to shut down. I had problems with gels out on the bike. I took my own but for some reason half of them got hard and could not use them. Then I thought it was ok but the ones they had out there were coffee flavor and I can't stand coffee so I just drank and ate a banana for the bike. This caused the body to shut down. Been a big guy at 6'6" and 240 lbs I burn about 1000 cals a hour and I was only getting back about 300 each hour not good at all. The last 8 miles were a lot slower and I was now in trouble for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Get more food into me and take more of my own gels out on the course. Check everything before the race and re check again. Bike was fast and great until mile 48.
Transition 2
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

New I was slow as I needed to find my cliff bars to try and eat on the run.
What would you do differently?:

nothing had to go this slow as I was in trouble.
Run
  • 2h 29m 34s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Went onto the run think how am I going to get through this. I started to eat my cliff bar and had one bite down and then it came flying back up. This happend 2 more times in the first mile so I new I was in for a long slow slow slow run. I just started on the water and gatorade at each aid station. I was running a lot and then walking about 20 yards. I tryed to run as far as I could befor I needed to walk. Just had nothing in me to keep it going. Then at mile 5 I started in on the coke. This stayed down and saved my race. At mile 8 the left knee started to give out. I have had ACL surgery on this leg. At mile 11 I started to fell great again and started to run faster but by this time it was to late I had lost so much time in the last 11 to make a difference. At the start of the race I wanted to do 5:15 but that went out the window at the start of the race. I just wanted to be under 6.
Got near the end and saw my wife and son waiting for me grabbed my 2yearold son and carryed him over the line. He was happy with it.
Hey I just did 70.3, i year ago I was sitting on a couch being fat now I did something for 6 hours with out stopping. I crossed the line and I'm happy with that. Bring on Ironman.
What would you do differently?:

Start in on the coke sooner. It helped once it kicked in.
Post race
Warm down:

No warm down, just ate a little pizza and pepsi.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My food intake was so bad on the bike. This cost me the goal time for me. I learned a lot in the race which will help me for arizona Ironman in April.

Event comments:

Great race will do again next year. Today I'm ready to get at it again. legs are a little sore but nothing to write home about. Can't wait for next monday when the real training starts for AZIM07

Good work Glen. I enjoyed your encouragement on the bike. I need to work on my nutrition on the bike some too.

See you at training. We are going to be all primed up for IMAZ!
