What are good/bad bike trainers? I'm hoping to spend less than $100 on ebay, but I know nothing about the brands. Which are brands or models to stay away from?

Thanks

Well, I just got a Kurt Kinetic Roadmachine.
I've only ridden it twice.

So far I like it. Quiet, stable, smooth.....

But I spent more than $100 on it. I think it was closer to $250.

Fluid resistance trainers are the best out there, but you'd have to get pretty lucky to win one on eBay for less than $100. When I bought mine from the Bay, mag trainers were around $80-100, and wind trainers were $50-75 or so. I went on the cheap and got a CycleOps Wind for $40 I think.

yeah I got the cheap cyclop mag. I figure its nice enerty level and I say couple hundred dollars. It is pretty nosiy but no idea how noosy it is compared to fluid though. I know wind is alot worse.

I bought a Vuelta Mag Trainer on eBay for $88 (free shipping). I think the seller was "bikeisland" or something like that. I took it to my LBS to have them check it out and make sure I knew how to use it and they couldn't believe how quiet it was. Of course, I have nothing to compare it too but they seemed impressed (for the type and price).

I'm not sure how long it will last but I live in Florida and hopefully won't need it THAT much... rainy days and a few cool mornings in February. For $88 it might be worth it for you to try.

Fluid is by far the best type - brand-wise, it's mostly preference and is proportional to price. I used a Performance Bike brand for 8 years before buying a CycleOps; the latter provides a much better resistance curve, but the Performance one did it's job just fine.

Have a Taxc Cycloforce magnetic trainer (have never used a fluid trainer).  It's nice, I can control the resistance and if I really want to hit climb just bump up the resistance and you have no choice but to stand up and pedal.

I just got a Minoura 500 D mag trainer from modernbike.com for 89.99. I also ordered the Cateye computer for $30. $5 shipping and it came in less than 2 days.

The trainer was easy to set up and is not loud. I can watch tv at a little above normal volume. It seems to have all the resistance I need, at least for now, might need more later but I doubt it.
