Subject: Am I anywhere near the ballpark with swimming?
Hi all,

I guess I'm looking for a measure of my progress to date. I'm a decent runner and biker but a fish out of water so to speak when it comes swimming. I have decided to do a tri next year so have been working on the swim.

I just started swimming laps this August. My swimming experience had just been recreational(i.e. swim out to the raft on the lake etc...) I have had a lesson and have signed up for another.

I train alone and don't really know any swimmers or triathletes so it's been hard to get reference on what to shoot for in terms of pace.

I swam 2000m freestyle continous in the pool today in 45min 21sec. I was breathing every two strokes and alternated sides every 100m. Like many beginners, I'm much better on one side than the other. Also, I do not know how to do flip turns yet.

I am painfully aware(and freaked out) the OW is a whole new ballgame, but I wanted to establish some fundamentals(like being able to go more than 100m without drowning) before divng into OW.

My plan is to try a sprint in the spring and, if that goes well, maybe an olympic.

The question is am I in the ball park (or pack) as far as swim pace for a sprint or olympic tri?

Thanks for any feedback.

It looks like you're about twice as fast me. You'll do fine.

You won't be a BOP'er

Don't worry about it. There aren't many walls to push off of in the middle of an OWS.

I think you will be fine. Don't sweat the flip turns. You'll learn them when you do. I would just continue to work on technique and vary your workouts. I wouldn't worry about doing any speed work but just mix up your workouts with intervals.

I swam around that pace in my last half iron, maybe a few minutes faster for the 1.2 miles and finished somewhere in the 30th percentile, so bottom of the pack, depending how you define BOP. Still, there were hundreds of people slower than me. While that time is slow, it is not terribly slow. I'd call that ballpark. Open water swimming is similar to pool, except the water is cold, deep and murky ;-)
