I'm looking to do my first half mary in January or Febuary. I don't mind a drive from Raleigh, but would probably prefer the warmer temps of NC, SC, GA or FL (northern). Which ones have you done? What can you recommend? I just want a well-organized race that is fun for me and not a hassle for the family. I have been considering Myrtle Beach, SC and Tybee Island, GA. Thanks.

Tybee marathon and 1/2 marathon....Tybee Island, GA.  Google it and see what you get.  I've never done it, but am doing the 1/2 this year....a very popular race.

I know that it is farther that what you are looking for but Houston is January 14th and it is great. I think it is one of the #2, if I am not mistaken, flattest and fastest mary in the US. The participation and crowd is awesome. Plus, we are having a BT party following the race! What more could you want???

The Myrtle Beach half-mary is pretty good - race organization is spot on, great support from the town, good crowd and flat, flat, flat. (Think the total elevational change for the entire race was less than 75'.)

It is in it's 10th year and will be run on Saturday, February 17th.  Proceeds benefit The America Red Cross and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (blood borne cancer research + patient services)

Did it last year for my first half-mary and plan to do it again.

(While outside of your time window, the Atlanta ING Marathon/half-mary is in March ...)

Lotsa folks run the Gasparilla half in Feb.  Very good race, lots of BT'ers.  I don't know whether Tampa is 'north Florida' enough for you, but the weather is pretty good.

I did the Tybee Marathon this past February.  It was my first, and I had a blast.

The weather on the GA coast is pretty flaky in February and the full marathon runners  had to contend with some pretty gnarly winds on the back half of the 26.2, but outside of that, it was very nice.  FLAT, too.  No real comment on the half, but the half- runners and the full- runners shared the first 13.1 miles.  Lots of aide stations, good support from the island folk - several houses had set up their stereos in windows and were on their front lawns cheering you on.

Plenty of rentals on Tybee Island can make for a good long weekend, too.

Have fun!

Step up the program and join us at Kiawah Island on December 9. You've got all of, uh, 5 weeks to get ready. (OH MY Gawd, only five weeks!)

Edit: Sorry, just checked the website and both the half and the full are sold out. But next year's the 30th anniversary!

Hey the Gasparilla 1/2 is going to be very exciting. You get to keep an eye out for me dragging my half lifeless body along the course. The Gasparilla weekend is probably in the top 3 BT gatherings that I've heard of.

There are no details on any BT events as of yet. Keep an eye out in the Florida Forum. I'll let you know as soon as I see something. Be sure to set the entire weekend aside for some fun. I had family here last year and missed out on all the BT fun.

I did the Tybee Full last year. Great race and I PR'd. However, doing the full, you run past the finish line 3 times. Doing it again this year, but deciding on the half.

I did the Tybee 5K last year and it was pretty nice. This year I am either going to do the Tybee Half or the Hilton Head Half (it is the weekend following the Tybee one....)

Weather was in the 50s and it was nice and flat!

Yeah the view/smell of the treatment plant is my favorite hahaha.
Bayshore is lovely, its those other odd parts I don't get...
Actually I will be (I HOPE!) doing the 5k, 15K, 1/2 Mary Blackbeard challenge, in costume of course! Good luck draggin' yer own rear end, I am sure I will be draggin' my own at the end of that weekend.

I was also going to suggest the Myrtle Beach 1/2 Marathon!
