Master 2278 State of Confusion | Subject: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food Tonight to get my daughter to eat brown rice I told her it was butter rice and that's why the color was different. She bought it...then ate it. What untruths do you tell your kids? (because i need some ideas!) |

Elite 3067 Cheesehead, WI | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food Oh, I'm right there with ya! We tell our son tons of 'white lies'... Spiderman eats this... X tastes like hotdogs.... And usually, if I go to eat something off his plate he immediately thinks it MUST be good and will try it. (trying food is a big issue with me... contempt prior to investigation infuriates me). And usually if its something I'm 99% sure he'll like once he puts it in his mouth, I'll bribe ...like try this and you can do that or whatever... and if I'm unsure if he'd like something, I act like he can't have it and that he has to eat something else (kiddie foods)...then when it is something he 'cant' have -- he now wants it with a vengeance. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food Just don't make your kids "sit at the table until those brussle sprouts are gone!" My sister and I sat at the table until bedtime one night when we were kids. We laugh about it today, but it wasn't funny at the time. Still never understood why parents force kids to eat stuff if they truly don't like it. Most kids can find SOME kind of fruit or veggie they like - make that all the time if you have to! |

You're right about that...my daughter is a fruit eater and my son will eat veggies, so I don't make either of them eat all of the one they don't like. (They must take 2 bites though.) |

Extreme Veteran 367 | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food Lisa, I'm with you. My dad would make me sit and eat my mixed vegetables until they were gone. Or I put them in the garbage, or garbage disposal, or wrapped them in TP and threw them in the toilet... he actually put them in the fridge and tried to make me eat them for breakfast the next day. I still can't get near a lima bean *shudder* I have a 3 y.o. who still prefers Cheerios to M&Ms (he had ONE at halloween and didn't want another) so I don't stress too much. That said, lots of things that aren't actually "Chicken" are chicken. Like turkey, ham, and occasionally fried okra Many other things that aren't "green beans" are green beans, like asparagus and peas. I also like the disguise-it method. Spinach hides VERY well in meatloaf, meatballs, and many casseroles. From what I hear (I haven't yet tried it), it also goes nearly undetected in fruit and yogurt smoothies!! |

Wife, Mother, Friend. 2457 South | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food Same here. My 10 year old hasn't been to McD's in AGES. He very much prefers Subway. My 13 year old, though, is a caffeine freak. HE's the pickiest eater ever. We also watch the Biggest Loser and he does pushups during commericals. Plus, there was an article in the paper last week about GHB and Kid1 read it (and he never reads anything he doesn't have to!!). Since he's a small fella I was like "thank you"...... |

Expert 704 The High Plains | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food Though I've always liked bananas, my brother and I didn't like the bruised ones when we were kids. My mother told us that it's the bruises on the bananas that build muscles. Needless to say, we gobbled them up.

Thats what my grandmother used to say too! And the other thing she said which I now say (to get someone to eat slower) - YOU CAN ONLY TASTE THE FOOD AS LONG AS IT'S IN YOUR MOUTH |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food My mom told me I had to eat the vegetables before I could have the bread (or whatever it was I really wanted.) And I can attest to the fact that you can put spinach and lettuce in fruit smoothies without your child knowing. I never knew. The big way my mom got me to eat my veggies was homemade vegetable juice spiked with apple. Still drink it every day. |

molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food hee hee. please don't hate me...but my kids LOVE veggies. tonight they were both asking for MORE brussels sprouts. no joke. ella's favorite food is cinnamon toast, but she also likes veggies...and fi, her favorite, hands down - broccoli. i think it helps that we have a garden and get veggies farm direct, so that they can eat fresh things at the peak of flavor. they both have a sweet tooth though. we tell them they only have a small spot in their tummies for sweet things. 'if you have some gummy worms now, you won't have any space left for ice cream later, because your sweet spot will be full already'. it actually works to keep them to just one or two sweet treats a day. |

Expert 968 Wellington, North Island | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food My mom and dad used to tell us that they were making my dad's secret recipe green beans. We weren't allowed to see them make it. Turns out they were opening a can, dumping it in a pan and heating it up while we were out of the room. And we ate. If it was Dad's secret recipe it MUST be good. Definitely better than other green beans. |

Frugal Gear Geek 2199 having fun with the kids | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food My biggest issue right now is not what as much as how much. They tend to eat a bunch of "healthyer" foods. Grapes, apples rice cakes, and lots of "crap" food. Mac and cheese, chicken nuggets and pizza. The biggest thing to me is not as much what but are you full. I never ask them to clean there plate. I may ask for one or two more bites, especialy if it is a family style meal and I want them to realy try it. Once they say they are full, that is it. Water and fruit till the next meal. They get the hint quick that they should at least try the new foods. Once they have tried it, I will make them anything they want that is in the house. |

Extreme Veteran 532 Plymouth MA | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food My son always claimed he hated fish...one night I made it and he gobbled it up and said "good chicken mom" I confess that I didn't correct him. I think he was 12 when he finally figured it out. Now he loves fish. My kids always loved "little trees" (brocolli) and "dinosaur trees" (asparagus) when they were little. |

Extreme Veteran 438 | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food I don't have any kids (yet) but my husband vows I will be sent to my bedroom while the children eat their dinner so I don't negatively influence them with my picky eating... Anything with Onions, Peppers, or Tomatoes are off the list for me. YUCK! Except raw tomatoes are OK. One time my mother forced me to eat squash. I just sat there and stared... then when I finally took a bite I promptly puked all over the table. All over everone else's plates... Hey, I warned her I didn't like it!! I sure taught her a lesson!! Needless to say, I wasn't forced to eat anything after that, but my dad stuck with the "Children starving in Africa" storyline for years after that (in fact, he even brings it up now... and I am turning 29 next week). Nothing like a healthy dose of Catholic guilt to help get me to eat my food. I used to offer to mail my dinners to Africa once I entered the smarta$$ years. Now I just run in a triathlon that raises money for Ethiopian Families. |

Member 27 | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food My youngest is fearless when it comes to trying new foods. One day we went out for sushi and he asked me what is was. I told him it was sashimi (raw fish) and that if he tried it, he would get just as big and strong as me. Now when we go out he eats more sushi than me. Feeding my kids just got that much more expensive. |

New user 50 | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food my 2 year old is just starting to be able to differentiate between "I don't like it" and "I don't want it right now"....we have a 1 bite try policy that we don't enforce too harshly yet. I did tell her at one point that cut up pea pods were "green chips"...she loves them... a game I play with her if she won't try/eat a particular thing is I walk my fingers toward her plate and say "here comes the x theif, coming to eat your x"....she usually grabs a bite and crams it into her mouth while giggling at that point...:D |

Extreme Veteran 584 coastal NC | Subject: RE: Lies we telll our kids to get them to eat healthy food I have a five-year-old boy. Tonight we ate 'worms and dinosaur eyeballs with blood and guts' aka spaghetti and meatballs and tofu in red sauce. Works like a charm. At least for a boy. Worked with me, too, when I was a wee lass--might be worth a shot. |
