Subject: Taking a break from BT

At the urging of my friends, they said I should tell BT of my upcoming leave of absence. I'll be back, but I will be gone from next week until Christmas time. I'll be back on for the holidays, then gone again until about Feb-March.

I made an intense and exciting personal decision, I joined the Army, MOS: 68W-M6. Civilian terms: registered nurse. After MONTHS of stressful paperwork, interviews and a couple of tests (passed with flying colors) they are sending me to nursing school. It is a great professional move for me (I think...). I will leave the Army with more knowledge and experience that I can even imagine right now. I think it will be wonderful...plus I get to travel!

Some misc. info:

  • I'll be in school for about a year and a half in San Antonio! Awesome. I'll have weekends off (not all the time) so I'll be able to race when I do have off. I won't be able to train over the winter so I pulled out of IMAZ. Its ok, there are always other years--and there is the Army Tri Team.
  • After that, who knows where I'll go. Its a 4 year commitment, but only 2.5 will be 'active serving' as I call it since the first 1.5 will be in school.
  • Aaron has been extremely supportive and I knew when I started the process I might lose him. I still might, but I couldn't have asked for a better person to help me through this.
  • THANK YOU to all my military friends who suffered through my endless questions to get me here. Bill, Jen DiCarlo, and Stake (Mike), and Rocket Man (brett) have been wonderful to me.

Edit
The other reason for choosing this route:
No matter what mine or everyones' opinions on the war are, one fact cannot be overlooked: there are men suffering, injured, and dying everyday. If I can hold one hand, help one person feel better, the risk will be worth it. I do not think I'll be put in danger. I am not going to be a combat medic (EMT), I'll be a nurse. Much less likely. There is a chance and I'm ok with that. I would rather be in a war-torn country than some small, country base in the US giving shots. I'd would give my life for that, when its my time, its my time and other than racing, I wouldn't be happier than going while helping others.

I'm sure many of you might be thinking where this is coming from, and its not a rash decision. My family and loved ones are behind me and are fully supportive. Its something I've thought about for years and the urge to serve has only grown since my cousin was medically discharged as a Ranger.

Anyway, not looking for anything from anyone here, people just thought that yall should know. I was fine not telling anyone.

Like I told you I respect you for making a decision to make a change in your life.  Too many people fear change and end up stuck in a rut that makes them miserable forever.  Good luck.

I don't know what we're going to do without our 'duct tape' though.

<sniff>

That really is an awesome opportunity and I know that it is a great decision. While I have not been in the military myself, I do have friends and family that have and I know that it has had a dramatic effect on their life. It is a great way for you to get to go to nursing school as well. Good luck in everything and we will keep you in our prayers.

When you get out, you are going to be in shape to kick everyone's tail!

Finally going public, huh?  Good for you.  You know I support your decision 100% and wish you the best!!!  (and I am not the least bit hurt that I didn't make the list of military friends ).  Just for that, it is now time I teach you a very important phrase.

Go Navy, beat Army!!!

My nephew is a Marine who got hit by an IED some two weeks ago while on patrol near the Syrian border.  While his best friend died in the explosion, he survived  ... but has half a Humvee of shrapnel + burns on one of his legs.

Even the docs in San Diego readily admit, it is the nurses that that are making the difference in his healing. (Shoot as other medical professionals on this board will likely opine, it is a wise doc that listens to the opinions of a skilled nurse.

Thanks for serving ...

That is an very couragous decision.
Our team trainer (that was with us all four years and traveled with the team and was always around) went the same route after college. We are still in touch.
She was actually in the HBO special Bagdad ER and was over in Iraq for a while. If have any questions for her just PM me and I will ask her.
I tried to join after college but they said my knee was to badly damaged. If they could see me now.
I bet you can't wait to smoke the PT tests.

Thanks for serving! Even if you're stationed at some little country post giving shots, the families left behind due to deployments need looking after also. As an Army wife, thanks for looking after our troops and their families!
