Subject: FlashPoint 60mm VS Zipp 404 question
So I've been doing my research for upgrading my wheelset. I've come to the conclusion that Zipp 404's are the my best bet for an all around good wheelset. But I noticed the other day in a thread someone talking about FlashPoint 60mm. They are designed by the composite experts at Zipp. They are about 116g heavier that the Zipp's. But I think I can get a brand new wheelset for around $900. So my question is are the FlashPoint's a good product or would it be worth it to spend a few extra dollars on a used Zipp wheelset?

Also, what could I hope to gain by going from my Neuvation Radials which I think are 28mm to the Zipp 404's? I did 23.1mph average on my 2nd sprint triathlon which was 12.5 miles on a relatively flat course. I'm moving up to the Olympic distance next year and would like to get the most out of the bike.

Thanks!!

Trispoke front, disc rear, <$1000, just as good or better aerodynamics. Weight is immaterial in most triathlons.

<==Oh look! There's a picture!

My 2¢.

I considered the flashpoints and they are made by zipp.  116 grams is like nothing.  I was also told that a set of race wheels...any set would get me 1 minute faster over a 40K time trial...I kept my money.

I raced FL 70.3 on a rental set of Blackwell clinchers w/ about a 60 mm dish to them. I then raced Timberman 70.3 on a set(rented again) of tubular Zipp 404s. The Zipps were clearly faster rolling and I ended up riding just 6 minutes slower on the hilly, windy, wet Timberman course than on the much easier FL course. I was worried about the sidewall height in windy conditions on the 404s but they handled great in the wind at both Timberman and Moo and Moo was a truly nasty day. Race wheels are truly an individual thing based on the types of courses you ride and your own riding characteristics but I know I'm acquiring some 404s of my very own for next year.

I own a pair of Zipp Flashpoint 60's. They're good wheels. I don't know this for certain, but I think the gains in going to the 404's would be minimal and probably not worth the extra $800-900 (at least for me).

That being said, they are no where near as cool as the 404's. Maybe if I changed the decals....

How much did you spend on the FlashPoint 60mm?

I think list price was $1100, but with a 15% discount (trisports.com), that worked out to about $950 or so. After I bought tires, a cassette, tubes, rim tape, etc. the total was about $1150-1200.
