That sounds like a good Idea. i tried every lap and once every up & back. the problem is i have to look at it to make sure the button actually actuated. really throws my rythem off but thats probably realistic because i never seem to get into a rythem in a race. I will try the every 100 yds.

Pearl Dad - 2006-11-14 10:25 PM I have a ironman timex watch and hit the lap function every 100 yds. I figure I cant forgot count on 4 lenghts of the pool at a time. After the workout I use the REVIEW function and count how many 100yd sets I did.

I normally flip turn, but for every 100 I do an open turn while saying 100, 200, etc. If I get lost in thought, usually I can remember if I did a flip or an open turn last time at the starting wall...

I do this. If you swim close to 2 mins / 100, you can look at your watch and tell whether you are on a 100 or a 50 b/c your total time will be an even minute or an odd minute, respectively. You can also see the lap time and tell if has been one round trip's worth of time or two.

have you thought about just swimming for time?? if i do lap count workouts i just roll with it such that if i lose track i go back to what i am sure i have swam, such that if i go 3000 or 4000 meters it usually ends up being 3200 or 4100 etc.... which only helps with the training..... i don't like to stop so the gummies or rings wouldnt be for me...

I own one of those "new fangled lap counting gadgets" and love it. It is made by Sportcount.....or something like that. I can't swim without it. I'm sure if you Google it you will find one. Our local swim store carries them and they are pretty reasonable at $20-$25.

Go through the alphabet. on the first lap think of words that start with the letter A, second lap think of words that start with the letter B, etc. etc... then count the letters or have a pre-set letter in mind to go to. A - J = 500 yards in a 25 yard pool (going down and back as one).

I have used coins.  Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.  Move 1 penny for each lap, 5 laps = 1 nickel, 10 = 1 dime, 25 = a quarter.  Works great, even when you do set workouts.

Although once I started doing set workouts I found that I lost track less often.  The only time I have issues is when doing a 10 x 100 or 20 x 50 workout, then I lose count of the set I am on.  Was that 12 or 13?  That is one reason for moving coins.

Just be aware that some life gaurds have a playful side, and might either take a coin or move them around for you.  That and kids have a tendency to like to pick up coins as well.

I just count.  When I do 200's, I count 3,2,3.  for 300's I do 5,2,5.  anything longer, I count the odd number of lengths, which is similar to racing longer distances where they have pool counters.  sometimes I count upward, sometimes downward.

I wear a timex Ironman, but I rarely split the watch unless I am swimming longer than 500's, then I take the time to split at the 500's.

Sometimes my mind is repeating the lap number for the entire lap.  It is like music to me, and helps me to think about what I want to think about.

I always lose track of my # of laps and always go with the lesser # I think I may be on to be on the safe side. If I'm doing an organized set type swim workout, I usually have an easier time keeping track.

However, if I'm just doing an endurance swim, I count my lengths or laps in my head by using the alphabet. So each set consists of 26 lengths or laps. For each set I apply a theme to what I'm doing such as people's names, food, animals etc. (Adam, Bob, Courtney . . . Apple, Banana, Cantelope . . . Antelope, Beaver, Cat, etc.) I don't know why this helps compared with just counting but it does. Maybe it just gets my mind off of the fact that I'll just be swimming back and forth for over an hour.

Any way, just my 2 cents!

If you swim a consistant time you can divide your total time by your normal lap time.  For me I am generally around 2:00 per 100 so so after 20 minutes I swam 20, 50's or 1000.

Since joining a Master's team I don't worry about counting much anymore.  It's the responsibility of the faster swimmers ahead of me, and they seem to do a pretty good job!
