Subject: Japanese cure for nose bleeds?

Last night my (very-small-for-his-age) 12 year-old son was playing indoor 3v3 soccer against some 10th graders.   One of the big kids cracked off a terrific shot, and my son took one for the team, stopping it with his face.   Of course, his nose started bleeding.

The opposing coach ran over and took control.  She had him lay flat on his back, legs and feet together, toes pointing up.  Then, using the side of her foot, she kicked him ("hard, not love taps" on the bottom of his feet five times.  The bleeding stopped immediately. He literally jumped up and got back into the game as if nothing had happened, and there were no residual effects (spot bleeding, clotting, draining down his throat, etc.).   She said it was a Japanese technique.  I've never heard of it, but it sure worked.

Anybody ever hear of this?

I did something like that once. My brother was helping me shingle my house and he accidently hit his thumb with a hammer. He was so busy whining and complaining about how bad his thumb hurt he wasn't getting any work done. So I told him I was going to use a Japanese cure for a smashed thumb. I had him lay on his back with his legs shoulder width apart and toes pointing straight up. I then kicked him as hard as I could in the crotch. Never heard another word about the thumb. Those Japanese must be some smart folks.

I could comment and the japanese crotch technique, but I'll just say that direct pressure works fine (pinch your nose). If you lay down or tilt your head back to keep the bleeding from getting messy, it just runs down your throat and makes you nauseated. Then when you vomit blodd a few hours later it's really a mess. So that's a no win situation.

The trick is to pinch the nose firmly, not just put a towel underneath to catch the blood. I get so annoyed when I see people coming to the ER holding a towel under their dripping nose. I tape two tongue depressors together and use them for hands free nose pinching and 15 minutes later they are miraculously cured.

My dad showed me a unique way to stop a nose bleed - tear off a piece of Kleenex, tissue, whatever, and roll it in to a ball. Stick that ball in your mouth, between your lip and gum line (as far "up" as it can go) on the side of your mouth opposite the nostril that is bleeding. I didn't believe him, until I tried it, and my nose bleed stopped in like a minute. Great stuff!

I don't know if these are true cures, or just ways people like to get back at you. I will soak a kleenex with Afrin and shove and leave it up there, it usually takes 10 minutes and you can take it back out

I've seen the Afrin trick before. My grandfather would get some real gushers. His doc recommended same.

I had three bad nosebleeds in one day this winter and figured out if you take a tissue and roll it up and stick it under your top lip as far as you can it works great! It dries out your lip though. It doesn't really matter which nostril I put it under, though.

I saw a water polo coach  do the Japanese thing to  a player on the pool deck after getting cracked in the nose.  The guy lied down on his back and the coach clocked him a couple of times on the bottom of his foot. It seamed to work  just fine until I hit the guy in the nose again.

We have two tricks that we use with any athlete with a nosebleed:

1. roll up a piece of gauze/kleenex/or paper towel and put it under the upper lip - there is a pressure point that slows down bleeding

2. apply an ice bag to the back of the neck - also slows down blood flow

Yes!!! I used to get nosebleeds all the time growing up! One time my bleed would NOT stop no matter what I tried, until I went to my principal's office and he performed this same Japanese technique. I thought he was crazy, but he said he used it on his kids with wrestling and swore by it. He did the same thing, I laid on my back, feet up, about 5 firm kicks to the soles of the feet and bleeding stopped! I tried it every time I got nosebleeds from there on out, and it worked every time! Crazy as it sounds, I'm a firm believer!
