Pre-race routine:

I managed to get up, get dressed, and out the door at a decent time. Stopped at three Starbuck's before I found one open. I have taken to having a cranberry-orange muffin before my long runs and races. Don't ask. It's just a thing I do.
Event warmup:

The warm up consisted of the half mile walk to get from where I parked to event central. There were tons of people here.
Run
  • 21m 46s
  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

I stayed in the front of the pack, even after they moved the start line up about 30 feet. At the sound of the gun there was a mass amount of people that sprinted. Most of them ran out of steam before the first turn. Even though I tried to stay in the front of the pack at race start I still found myself passing people. The first mile was a bit hampered with people dodging and getting squeezed in the turns. Second mile I slowed slightly, so I would have something at the end and for the 10K. The last 1.1 miles I picked up the pace. Almost slipped on my a$$ rounding the last corner. Figures the only puddled on the course is at the turn before the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

I really think that before I do these shorter distances I need to warm up for at least a mile or so. My second mile always seems to suffer. I catch my zone after 10 or 15 minutes. A good stretch after a warm-up would also be good.
Post race
Warm down:

My warm down consisted of a stretch for my VERY tight calves. I also walked back to my car (half a mile away) and back.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not getting a warm-up in and the amount of people running.

Event comments:

With over 2500 people doing the 5K and some 600 doing the 10K it is difficult to manage. I am not sure what is up with moving the start line at the beginning. It was nice that they blocked off the entire area to traffic. I'm glad I don't live in that area.

Ok, I get it, you "Nickel and Dimed" this race.

Looks like you had a great 5k. (And a smart one as it sounds like you saved something for the second race)

Good idea to start at the front of the pack! Doug and I were way back with our daughter and dodged people the whole race! Great time on both runs.
