Swim
  • 10m 20s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

I can do better. My swim time was about 2 minutes slower than I had projected. I think a lot of that had to do with my position in the water, getting beat and banged around did not help. Also, I started out way too fast and got exhausted too soon. I think that was just adrenaline.
What would you do differently?:

Next time I will position myself better and start out slower.
Transition 1
  • 04m 31s
Comments:

Long up-hill from swim exit to transition. That hill was brutal. If I wasn’t so tired coming out of the water I could have made it faster; but everybody else had to go up it too.
Bike
  • 45m 6s
  • 12 miles
  • 15.96 mile/hr
Comments:

I feel pretty good about my bike time. 148 out of 311 (men) isn’t bad; but I can do better there too. Here are the over-all bike comparisons (my time compared to all the other men):

Age 19 & under (9 guys and I was faster than 5 of them)
Age 20-24 (23 guys and my time was faster than 10 of them)
Age 25-29 (30 guys and my time was faster than 15 of them)
Age 30-34 (57 guys and my time was faster than 41 of them)
Age 35-39 (77 guys and my time was faster than 30 of them)
Age 40-44 (54 guys and my time was faster than 30 of them)
Age 45-49 (33 guys and my time was faster than 18 of them)

My average speed was 17.3 mph. Only 10 guys had an average over 20 mph. I need to get up in the 18-19 mph range. I started out slow the first 3 or 4 miles; then I got faster (a lot of that was caused by the hang-over from the swim). I slowed down a lot the last mile and a half too. The road in the park was rough (popcorn) and up-hill.

Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Both calves cramped coming in to transition. I could have done better if I hadn’t cramped so bad coming up the hill for the bike finish.
Run
  • 33m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

A lot of walking because of the cramps. I’m most disappointed with my run time. I can do a lot better than 33:55. My average was 10:57 per mile. I’ve been averaging 29 minutes for 3.25 miles on my training runs. That’s about 8:55 per mile. Two minutes per mile slower isn’t good.
What would you do differently?:

Improve hydration and pre-race nutrition.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Besides being a first-timer and not knowing what I was doing, I would say it was the leg cramps.

Event comments:

Great venue and organization. I will definitely do this one again. The race sold out limit of 600 (they allowed 629 to enter). The 2007 race is limited to 700.

Bobby:

Nice job in your first tri!!I can't wait to write my first race report, but will have to wait until April-May, but I appreciate your candor and honesty and I will look to hydrate the crap out of myself to avoid cramping. Thanks for the report!
