I get up around 5:15 am so that I can get the bulk of my workouts in before going to work. The problem is that I end up with nothing on my stomach. It doesn't bother me, but should I be concerned that I have nothing in my system? If I'm running/biking, I drink about 16 oz of Cytomax during the process. I always get a good breakfast in after the fact, too.

If it doesn't bother you, then no.  I'm the same way; I seldom eat much before a morning workout.  Maybe a glass of diluted orange juice.

I will have some diluted Accelerade. If I'm starving I might have a few bites of PB toast.

Nice that you get to sleep late like that.

Unless my workout's going 2-3 hours, I'm going on coffee alone.

I would feel terrible if I worked out right after eating.  I try to have more than an hour after any meal.  More if there was dairy or meat.

I always try and eat a Cliff Bar as that is my pre-race snack and it's good to acclimate your stomach to whatever food you are going to race with during training.

I wake at 0500 to run before work.

I eat 2 fig newtons and ~6 ozs of water.

After running, I make a 34oz protein shake to drink on my way to the shop, and then keep eating all day long.

I am getting up at 5 am. Eat a bowl of oat meal and have a glass of orange juice. Hit the YMCA at 5:30 for my work out. I get to work about 8:30 and eat a banana and some yogurt.

I can't eat before swimming or I feel sick to my stomach. I eat when I get to work. But I can pretty much eat anything before biking and be fine. I haven't run in the morning ... yet.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one heading to the gym on an empty stomach.

I always had a PBJ sandwich before my early AM workouts. Serious ones... anything expected to be over an hour and a half I eat before hand. And after.

Early riser as well (4am normally due to family), never had any issues without eating but if doing anything long will take along gel and this gets me thru just fine.

Ditto here.  Up at 0445-05:15 weekday mornings, have a glass of water perhaps, and go get right at it.  Though for longer runs (>1hr), I'll bring along some Powergel.

I find morning workouts are much more a factor of your previous evening's nutrition, than anything you might eat immediatley before.   Maybe that's just me.

I'm a single piece of toast with butter and jam person myself. (butter keeps me from getting hungry in 20seconds) I think its good to at least have some calories whether it be food or fluid, just to get the fire started. I think of my body as an engine or a furnace. But then again I'd as soon have food next to the pool with me, on the bike or with me on the run. I'm hungry all the time. Must eat or the headaches start and I get angry..... Sort of kidding, but not really.

POP TARTS, bananas and Hammer Gel, not all at once but rotated to keep it interesting. They work for me

I haven't run in the morning ... yet.

It's actually pretty easy; first, you re-set the alarm...

I get up around 5 as well. On the way to the gym, which is about a 15 minute drive I have my coffee and a Luna bar. Being a foodie, sometimes this is what motivates me to workout!

For early morning workouts, I don't have anything to eat beforehand. I might have something small to drink before a run since I'm usually dehydrated in the morning. I'm good about eating and drinking immediately after working out. Sounds like you are the same.

There is even a school of though that says for endurance training to not take in calories 2 hours before and even during base building workouts so that you can put your body into a somewhat glycogen depleted state to better train (produce more fat burning mitochondria) your body to rely more on fat.
