Of all the IM distance racers I've met, they generally only go 2.4 or more once or twice in the weeks leading up to the race, and then it's in open water.

2.4 a week is not a very good use of your time, I'd echo Jim's and other's comments re: technique.

As for "average IM swim time," I'll say that doesn't exist. You'll get low :40s to 2:whatever the cutoff is and everything in between.  I'd say a decent time is 1:10 or better (never having done one)

Weight plays much less of an issue in the water.  While dropping weight may improve your overall cardio system, it's not going to get you any faster if your technique is no good.

I have also heard that in races that are wetsuit legal, the wetsuit offers a greater advantage - buoyancy - to the weaker/mediocre swimmer vs. the more conditioned and technique-enhanced swimmer.

100% true

I don't hate swimming per se, I hate that I'm crappy at it, and I don't get a sense of accomplishment out of doing 'well' because well for me is pretty sh!tty compared to 99 percent of the swimmers out there. Smile

welcome to my running world, brother

Until you can get 100's in the 2:00 neighborhood, spending 2 hours in the pool isn't going to help you much.

Primary focus at this point should be technique, IMHO.

Thanks but then why spend 2 hours in the pool. . only take you 1:17 mins to do 77 laps at 50 meters a lap. which gives you little over 2.4 miles .

Because when you've done >6k in a single swim, that 2.4miles doesn't seem bad at all.

If you swam 2.4 miles in a pool and you were able to keep track of the laps you did... I think you are amazing!

I can swim 2.4 but it must be open water. I'll go nuts swimming that many laps in a pool.

I am not amazing. I cheat I use coins to count. every lap you move a penny over 4 pennies then you most the nickle over and so forth. I lose count if I have to count 8 laps and if I have to count lengths then forget about it.

hehe I ended up sharing a lane with one of those small tiny girls who can fly in the water. I was 5 meters from the wall and she could do all 25 meters in the same time with the breast stroke. Man she was fast.

yeah 6k swim would make 2.4 miles or about 3.85k feel like nothing. I guess one big thing I have learnt through all of this is 6k swim does not seem as crazy as it once did.

I also figure I should get myself some set swim work outs rather than just playing it by ear also.

When you go long in the pool, I found the best way to track laps is not to count. Every 10 min, I do a timed 100 interval. By the end of the swim, I have 5 timed 100's and can average them out and then calculate the yardage. From start to finish, the deviation is usually 1:29-1:31, so I average exactly 1:30 per 100 or 4000 yards per hour every time at a nice cruising pace.

Good Advice and key numbers from Coredump , keep up the master's swim . Its a great workout. And nearly all the groups here does is intervals with short rests. I love using the fins to get a better lower body workout , they help streamline my big long heavy legs (like using a wetsuit does in a race) and ease up the workload on my shoulders.

Add me to the list of supporting that statement. IMO 2hrs of laps with poor technique is something that might well hurt your swimming at this point.

Well my issue I do not ahve the strength it seems to go that fast. I am a 290 lbs guy so for me I have alot of drag in the water. I know my form may not be perfect but its really alot better than it was.

Good news is I am down to 1:08:00 for 50 but I just can not seem to hold that pace for 100. I am getting stronger and once I do I think I will be in alot better shape also. I am one of thosepeople where strength training would probably help my swimming out alot.

If your intention is to loose weight (not that it has to be) one of the best ways is lots of swimming and many miles on the bike. Both are low impact and difficult to hurt yourself with over training.

Great news on the 1:08 split but I'll take back what I said. If you can get a 2hr swim in right now keep it up. Pass on the strength training. If you start dropping weight you'll find the same muscles that could easily pack the 290#s around can hoist 250 with no issues and at 200# you'll start looking like Arnold :)

You are not the only one here that has been where you are at now. Sounds like you are doing great things.

Couple of thoughts on knee rehab having done that myself. Try water walking along with swimming. I don't know a faster way to get a knee back in working order from surgery. Wish my doc had made a bigger point of it. Our lap pool is only 4 to 5" deep. Walking a few 1000 yards every other day can have some amazing results. Also be really careful pushing off the wall while doing laps. Good way to trash that new knee. I am a literally 51 weeks out of surgery and am still very careful on the wall turns.

just to let you all know that my wieght is down and my swim time is down. :59 for 50 meters. no idea for 100 meters but all out I can get down to :59 seconds. yeah me. I trashed my old time of 1:08:00. During my swim my coach stopped me and wanted to know jsut how much strong I look in the water now. I am still pretty slow but I am getting faster every day.
