Total Time = 1h 26m 47s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 47/56
Pre-race routine:

I woke up sweating, that's how warm it was at 7:00am. I also felt as though I'd been hit by a truck, I just didn't feel at all rested, then I discovered the gland in my neck was up. *Sigh*.
Had a banana and an english muffin with honey and rode the 5 minutes to the course.
Event warmup:

I was warm, everyone was warm. For the second time ever the sleeveless wetsuit paid off. We got in the bay to cool down not warm up!
Swim
  • 10m 59s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 12s / 100 meters
Comments:

I'm incredibly disappointed by this swim. A combination of two things probably, initially I got stuck behind some slower swimmers, then I go swum over. My navigation was well off, I swum quite wide given I was sick of battling in crowds. I didn't feel strong in the water either...
What would you do differently?:

I think it was just a bad swim day for me...
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Actually pretty happy with this!
What would you do differently?:

I racked my bike by the seat post rather than the handle bars and it worked really well.
Bike

Comments:

After my disappointing swim I figured I had to at least have a crack at the bike. My race nemesis pulled away from me and I just couldn't hold her. The heat got to me, I could just feel it sapping my energy.

The race officials were out with vengeance. The girl behind me almost got pinged for drafting, and this women on the back of the motorcycle was yelling at us for a good 10 minutes. I was just like
p!ss off and let me concentrate on the ride.
What would you do differently?:

I made up 8 places in the ride, so I'm pretty happy. Still 7 seconds slower than last time. Hopefully over the Christmas break I'll get on the bike a little more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Times are getting better! Still could knock 10 seconds off.
What would you do differently?:

I still have to work on the dismount. By Jan 14 I will have the confidence to do this!
Run
  • 34m 4s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 49s  min/km
Comments:

This is where it all falls apart! I never felt decent on the run. It was scorching hot, but at times I felt cold and sick. I could not move my legs any faster than the non pace they were going.
What would you do differently?:

The conditions killed me. I melted. Might have to look at taping my feet again, because a cluster of blisters popped up and the timing band bit me.
Post race
Warm down:

Thank god the volunteers at the finish line handed me a Gatorade and some water when I was done. Because I was well and truly DONE! I drank a lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and feeling less than 100%. This was easily the toughest race I have ever done. I can't even begin to understand how the competitors doing the Shepparton Half Ironman (where it was closer to 40C) managed.

Event comments:

As usual the race was well organised. I could certainly go without the women on the back of the motorbike yelling at competitors and there should have been more drink stations out on the run.

Sorry the race didn't go as well as you had hoped, but it sounded like you did a great job on the bike and your transitions are coming along nicely. If you felt cold on the run, you were probably a bit dehydrated. Extreme heat is really no fun on race day! Good luck at your future races and enjoy the holidays.

Good race considerinig how you felt and the overpowering heat! (I was finishing moving house in that heat and I did give a thought or two to the guys and gals up at the HIM in Shep - that must have been a war zone!)

At least you can say you raced on the hottest December day in 50 years!

Congrats on pulling out a tough one under the heat. It sounds like the conditions were really tough. You might have been a little dehydrated on the run or lacking a few calories.

I'm looking forward to your next race in Jan. If I were that nemesis you mentioned, I'd be a bit scared.

Nice race in those conditions, I would take that swim time in good conditions, never mind what you went through.

What a bummer the hot weather spoiled the day.

So your swim and run where a bit slow at least you had a kick arse ride and nothing feels better then passing other slower competitors.

I pray your next race is on a colder day.
