This is from the AZ Republic this AM...

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/1214brk-fatal14-ON.html

I have 2 comments:

1. We just had a ride of silence in Gilbert/Mesa this past weekend to make people more aware of riders and to remember the death of a fellow cyclist.

2. Illegal immigration and unlicensed drivers...

Grrrr - that really irks me.

Driver without license fatally hits bicyclist

A woman driving without a license and insurance struck 30-year-old bicyclist riding on a sidewalk Wednesday night, killing him, police said.

The 25-year-old woman was driving a Ford Expedition turning right from a private drive in the 600 block of West Broadway Road and hit the bicyclist who was riding on the north sidewalk just after 6 p.m. , Mesa police Sgt. Chuck Trapani said. The woman didn't have a driver's license but had a Mexican identification card, officials said

The victim, a Mexican national, was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborne where he was later pronounced dead. Police have contacted the Mexican Consulate to notify the victim's family.

Trapani said impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Traffic-related citations may be pending.

The incident brings Mesa's traffic fatalities this year to 47 fatalities in 44 wrecks. There were a record 67 fatalities in the city in 2005.

Please watch out for drivers making right turns, especially out of driveways.

I see this too many times when I'm running (against traffic), drivers will look left for oncoming cars but totally fail to look right.

Bummer.  Yes folks, let's look out for people who are coming out of intersections and driveways when we are approaching from the right.  I almost got run over yesterday while running.  A woman was turning right at an intersection but only looked on her left before hitting the gas.  I had the right of way but still had to spring back in order to avoid getting hit.  When she finally saw me, she made a contmeptuous face and kept going!

2. Illegal immigration ...

Hard to say if this is any type of factor at all. While the driver was a mexican immigrant, so was the person who was killed. They DO have cars in Mexico too.

I hope the driver faces Criminal Charges up to involuntary manslaughter.

Illegally driving and killing someone should fit the criteria...driving is not a right, it's a privliege(sp?)

There is a race in January to benefit the triathletes that were hit a couple months ago in the Phoenix area.

How can you say this without knowing the situation? I think it's not too smart to be riding a bicycle on the sidewalk while it's dark (it is dark after 6pm in AZ, right?).

I'm not taking sides and it IS a huge tragedy, but I don't see the specifics in the story to draw any conclusions about it. Heck, I'm still trying to figure out how someone who was "turning right from a private drive" hit and killed someone riding a bicycle on the sidewalk.
