As a newbie I am trying to figure out how to break up the training schedule into something I will be comfortable with and will not work against me.

I love riding and have been riding 4 or 5 days on with 1 day off since the end of June. Today is an off day.

Yesterday I rode, ran and swam - so I slept very well.

How do the rest of you train? Do you only do one activity per day? How often do you rest?

I am curious to hear about how people who are doing it regularly manage their training schedule.

I run, bike, and swim 3 times per week (each sport).  So I've got 9 workouts, and one rest day (maybe 2 if I have a really long ride or something).  I do 1-2 workouts per day.  Looks something like this:

M-rest

T-run; swim

W-bike

Th-run; swim

F-bike

S-swim; long bike

Su-long run

I follow a training plan from "Training Plans for Multisport Athletes" by Gale Bernhardt.  Works for me!  I don't do all 3 in one day for fear of overtraining/injury.

Hey Fat Man!!

I do a weights/swim on Monday, Bike on Tuesday, Brick on Wednesday, Run on Thursday, OFF on Friday, Longer Bike/Weights on Saturday and a Longer run on Sunday.

This works well for me except when I get home from work and fall asleep instead of doing my workout!!! =) I think I should probably be doing the run/bike/swim segments 3 times a week, but I just don't have the time (or energy!!)

Generally my schedule looks like this:

M - rest
T- run (5 mi)
W- Swim (2400 yds)
Th - Run (5 mi)
F - Swim (2400 yds)
Sat- Ride (20-30 mi) or brick (12 mi ride - 3 mi run)
Sun- Ride (20-30 mi) or brick (12 mi ride - 3 mi run)

or some variation thereof depending on my schedule. Do what works into your day, but try to get in each discipline at least once a week.

Hey Bear,
I notice you don't take any rest days at all.
Does this cause you any problems? My own feeling is that I would like to go out everyday but I am worried about injuries.

Monday's as close as I come to a rest day, everything is done at an excessively easy pace. More often than not the ET session is 1/2 hour or less and I've been known to blow off the bike ride on occasion.

Actually, I've done this basic schedule for a couple of years, except I did 45 minutes of weight lifting instead of the swim. I've had minor injuries, but nothing serious. Granted, I didn't start this schedule on Day One, but rather evolved into it over a number of years.

I don't really have a schedule. I ride my bike to work about 5 days/week--15-20 km each way(I work at 2 different gyms) I vary the intensity of my rides every time. I then alternate days of running with days of swimming, and throw in 2 days of weight training when I can. I take one full day off from any type of training.

Hey Fatman -

I have been doing my first season of Sprints this year and what I have done is taken the sprint training plan off this site and built it into my schedule.

My schedule usually looks like this -
Monday - Short swim, short run, and weights
Tuesday - Long Run
Wednesday - Short Bike
Thursday - off
Friday - Long swim and weights
Saturday - Off
Sunday - Long Bike

I move the day off during the week around as needed. Sometimes for one of the runs I substitute a session on the elliptical ( I hate the treadmill!)
I have 8 hours worth of graduate class on Saturday - if I get done early I may try to sneak in an extra run. I have found that it works pretty well so far. I think the training plan on the site is a good starting point though.

Hey CJWonder,
I have to ask - what do you do in the winter? Do you go to a gym or do you train at home? I am guessing your winters in Milwakee are probably as snowy and cold as our winters in Montreal.

BTW it was nice to see someone else who takes a day off now and then.

Winters....I do spend quite a bit of time at the gym. I try to do as much of the running outside as possible yet.. only because I hate the treadmill and as long as it isn't real icy that usually works ok. I hit the gym to bike and swim. I am thinking about investing in a wind trainer for this year but this whole tri thing is getting to be an expensive (but good!) habit.
My goal is to do a couple Oly's next year so I think the gym is going to become my second home as it starts to get cold. I probably will look into Spin class this year too.

I also am thinking about taking a winter vacation somewhere warm and finding a tri that coincides...

  • Wed - AM : 60 min bike ride/ 15-20 mile
  • Wed - PM: 60 min open water swimming (if it's not raining if it is skip it)

  • Thurs - AM 30 min run/1hr spin/bike, 1000 m swim
  • Thurs - PM: 1hr weightlifting/1000 m swim

Friday - 15 mile bike ride AM

Saturday: AM - Kickboxing or spin, 1hr weighlifting, 1000 m swim

Sunday restday

Twice a month 25-30 mile bike ride on Sunday and no rest day.
