Subject: swimming/running after rotator cuff tear surgery

I posted a question about this on the HEalth/injuries page and only got 1 response so I thought I'd move over here. Has anyone had surgery for a rotator cuff tear? I had an MRI and found out I have a small tear. (4months post-injury...frustrating delay) I will have surgery in FEbruary. I am wondering what I should expect for a recovery. Are triathlons next summer out for me? July-August will be 5-6 months post-op.  How long before you can run? I would love to hear anyone's advice/experience with this.

Thank you!

I had my rotator cuff surgery 21 years ago. I did my first triathlon 3 months after it. I didn't really train for it. I just kind of went through the motions.

The muscles in the shoulder are very small so I would avoid anything that could risk your recovery. If your out running like I was last March and trip and land hard you might re-injure yourself. Be patient. Just follow the doctors instructions. You don't want to have this injury and recovery drag out.

That's good advice. I will be sure to be careful and "behave." On a good note, 3 months isn't too bad!!  Maybe there's hope for my summer!

The only other advice I can offer is keep the shoulder strong. Make sure you never slack on your weight training. I can notice a huge difference in my swimming when I am lifting consistantly and when I am not.

Do you notice any weakness/pain now?

If what you're doing causes surgury, then doing it after surgury will only make it back to the way it was.

I'm sorry to say, but shoulder injuries are often career ending, and I know many who have left my swim club because of them.

my shoulder injury was caused by falling off my bike. I crashed on the railroad tracks. I swam competitively from age 8-22 without a single pang in my shoulder.
