Who's done this particular race?  Any insight you can offer re: the swim, bike, and/or run legs?  From what I've seen, the ride profile looks fairly tame.  How's the run?

This'll be my first tri - ever - and I'm looking forward to it.

Tri the parks is a great 1st race! I did not do this particular race, but my first tri was indian springs last year and it was a fantastic first experience. My advice is to do a dry run on the course- it really helps ease the race day jitters. This will be a well organized and fun race.

Done it twice..you can read my race report.

The lake water is dirty. You will need a wetsuit unless u are a fast swimmer, you will be fine.

The bike really have about 2 hills that might give you some challenges.

The run is around the lake in the park to a short gravel road then back to a street road -- turn around and finish in the transition area.

It's fun. My first time -- the race was downgraded to a expensive 5k race due to the nasty weather. My only complaint in this race is the lake water -- yucky!

This is a good first race... good luck. I am sitting this one out this year.

Cheers..

I like John Tanner.  I did it last year and it was early in the season (I think April?).  Looking back it was a great race to start the season off.  The swim is ok...the lanes to swim in are fairily narrow as I remember and there is a steep grassy hill to run up to get to the transition.  The bike was pretty easy as I remember and the run was a combination of trails (meaning golf cart type trails) and dirt road.   Some hills as you are nearing the turn around, but nothing stands out too much in my memory.  It is a pretty fast race!  It would make a great first race!  Go for it! (I have pictures of last year in my album)

I did it last year as my first. You can even sign up as a novice and have a separate wave start from the age groups. I did that just for peace of mind that the first timers probably would not maul each other on the swim. It worked for me.

It was a very well run race.

I will be back there this year again.

I think it was the next to last wave to start - one of the women's waves was last. And is was men and women novice together. With my swim speed that was only slightly faster than the anchored turn bouys my bike was EASY to find in transition.

It seems that this is a very popular "first" race for a lot of people and it is set up to be novice friendly.

Good Luck, LHablas!  My first Tri was the 2006 Mistletoe State Park sprint.  It was tough, but fun. I have the same comments about the lake.  It was icky.  Warm and icky.  Although, for whatever reason, the lake water tasted better then what was being passed out on the run!

I signed up as a novice for my first triathlon.  They (tribluesky) put the novices in the back as the last wave to start.  I have been banged around by many novices - if you can swim fast, I would re-think the novice thing.

Hah...I'm not a fast swimmer - right now I might as well be a Pet Rock...

Perhaps in a few months I'll be faster.  For now, I'll plan to bring my boxing gloves too...

Thanks for the feedback.

Do a "Search Forums" search for John Tanner in Race Reports. They are loaded with info. It is a good first race, but there was a bottleneck at the start of the swim last year that created a swimming brawl right out of the start. It might be a good idea to hang back a bit if you aren't used to full contact swimming.

Thanks...did that and read all of them...good stuff...just wanted to glean any other insight that might be out there...as I'll be in the cheap seats (aka Novice division) for this race, I may bring some popcorn and a beer while watching the other waves start.  Thanks again!

Tanner was one of my first races of last season and I enjoyed it. Was not my first TTP series and it was easier than some of the others I've done in the past. Above comments all resemble my experience. The water was a little cold (and muddy!) but I didn't wetsuit because it's a sprint. And yes, there was definitely a bottleneck at the start. I am considering doing it again this year just to get into the melee for practice for IM WS.

It's a fast track and has good attendance. Enjoy it!

This will be my first tri also. I feel comfortable with the bike and run portions. But a little worried about the swim. I havent swam since October. I don't have acces to any indoor pool.
I plan on hitting West Point Lake a few times with wetsuit before the race.

That would be some serious motivation to pick up my pace on the swim. I never heard about the gator and I live only 15 minutes from the lake.

i'm psyched for it b/c that's my hometown. i just hope the weather is nice. i lived in Ctown for 10 years and that area has to be the thunderstorm capital of GA. even now, it seems like i'm always seeing that area covered in red when they show the weather maps on the local news. last year the weather was cloudy which was good b/c it kept the temperature down. i think it rained the next day. the year before it was shortened to a 5k b/c of rain. i don't know about previous years.

I am sooo ready do do a triathlon! My only concern is wetsuit or no wetsuit. I am sure the water will be cold, but I don't know If I want to wrestle the thing in transition.

Seconding most of the comments above...

I've done it without a wetsuit - it's not cold enough to be dangerous, and I wasn't alone. This year, I'll be wearing one, but just because I want wetsuit experience for longer races.

The TriBlueSky group does a nice job of making newbies feel comfortable, and they don't break down the finish line before the last person comes in.

One note -
This isn't a buffet style triathlon - if you're planning on eating big after the race, byo carbs.

I've never done this race but I did an adventure race there a couple of years ago and it's very pretty. I do remember several hills.
I was thinking about doing that race this year as a -kick me into gear for the tri season, but the water temp has me worried it's been too cold outside and I don't have a wet suit. I'm also not a strong swimmer well.... i'm not fast. And who ever mentioned the gator freaked me out! I'm from southern Louisiana and i've seen people attacked by gators before. Were you serious?

This will be my first tri.  I'm psyched, can't wait to see if all this training will pay off.

I'm also concerned about the water temp.  I had assumed it would warm up enough by then but this recent cold weather has me concerned that the water will be frigid.  I don't own a wetsuit and don't plan to get one between now and then.  hmmm, oh well.
