Subject: IM marathon without Gatorade?
I hate the taste Gatorade leaves in my mouth after drinking it.  It makes me feel sick to my stomach.  The last marathon I did I drank only water, took in 4 gels, and popped quite a few endurolytes and I had my best marathon yet.  Do you think that plan would work for the marathon in IMAZ?  I'm used to running in high humidity, so I don't know how the dry air is going to effect me.  I'd also prefer not to carry my own drink, so a fuel belt is out.  What do y'all think?

At IMFL, by the time the marathon rolled around I was so sick of gatorade that I tried the defizzled coke and chicken broth after about 5 miles. They were awesome, especially the chicken broth and I went to them the rest of the way. At most Iron distance races you are hitting an aid station every mile or so and you have plenty of nutritional choices (gels, fruit, pretzels, candy, water, coke, broth, gatorade) so you could easily get around not taking gatorade. However skip the beer or whiskey stops unless you are really having a bad day

I ran one on coke and orange slices ( plus some endurolytes ), so yes, it's definitely doable.

If water, gels, and endurolytes works for you in training better than gatorade, then by all means plan for that during the race.

Though, gels and water was originally my plan too, but by the time the run came around, my stomach didn't want any gels.  So just be ready to change your plan and adapt to your body on race day.  Be prepared with a backup plan, and a backup plan for the backup plan.

Thanks guys!  I figured I'd get those responses, but I needed some reassurance.  I'm thinking I'll probably be drinking a lot of chicken broth.   Is chicken broth available at the start of the run?  I'm guessing since IMAZ is a loop course it'll already be there for those on their second loop when I'm starting my first?

Chicken broth is NOT available from the start. It was available after about the first 10K, if I remember correctly. I could have used it from the beginning, but it wasn't there. It is WONDERFUL!

I think the chicken broth is what I'm most looking forward to...and the Coke.  Those two things breathe new life into me at ultras so I'm sure they're gonna rock the house at IMAZ.  I like your water/gel/endurolytes idea though...I get sick of Gatorade after a while too...I'll have to plan for that to be an option should I get sick of the Gatorade taste.  Great question!

Did you all practice with coke and the other things before race day, or just try them on the course and find out that's what worked?

I hadn't had a coke, or any other soda, for years prior to my first IM, so I tried de-fizzed coke during the run of my last two race prep bricks to make sure I could handle it. No problems in training, or during the race.

Sometimes. A friend of mine volunteered at an IMAZ aid station 2 years ago and when her shift started they had her on chicken soup duty. But they failed to give her a spoon to stir anything with. "Just stir it with your entire arm" the head people said. But people were coming through so fast and needed soup they served it without being up to temp. As she mentioned, they wouldn't have won any health code awards for what they served.

Yep...from chicken. I'm vegetarian, so I'm staying far away from that stuff. I'll be trying the cola thing though.
