Age Group = F35-39
Age Group Rank = 400/715
Pre-race routine:

* Overall and AG rankings published so far are based on clock time, not chip time. Since I started 7 minutes back from the mat, my actual ranking are much better.

The usual breakfast routine plus a few less-usual things like setting out the forks and spoons for the post-party and wiping down the bathroom counter. Another first: wrote my pace plan in sharpie on the back of my hand. I had a GOAL for this one - under 2 and a half hours! This was aggressive for my second half, after last year's finish of 2:38:02.
Event warmup:

Parked the car, walked in, porta-potty, corral. I started with Holly (tri4good), not for long though!
Run
  • 2h 31m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Pace, schmace! Most of this race, I couldn't run two miles steady to save my life. The numbers on my hand said start at 12:15, then 12, then hold 11:15-11:20 steady until mile 10, then speed up to the finish. Um, yeah.

Reality:

mile 1 - 13:55 - (WHAT THE HECK? Hmm, maybe all that weaving through the crowds slowed me down some. Pick it up!)
mile 2 - 11:18
mile 3 - 11:09 (Okay, back off a little...)
mile 4 - 12:19 (NOT THAT MUCH!)
mile 5 - 11:37
mile 6 - 12:06
mile 7 - 10:48
mile 8 - 11:14
mile 9 - 11:13
mile 10 - 11:47
mile 11 - 10:46
mile 12 - 11:21
to 31.1 - 11:40

So, I didn't quite make my goal. But I pushed hard! Throughout the race, and especially those last few miles, I kept telling myself, "pick it up, pick it up, hey," until I was straining every muscle, pushing myself along at total painful effort... which made it weird to be barely creeping past the walkers, or people who just appeared to be jogging along. I RAN.

Most interesting spectators: (1) the ancient lady who bundled herself up in blankets in a rocking chair in her front yard, rocked, and urged us forward by lifting one, then the other, of her birdie-feet-slippered feet; and (2) the Rocky Guy. This man stood out on Montrose with no paraphenalia whatsoever except his own cupped palms, through which he hollered the "Rocky" theme song, quite possibly for hours on end. "Da-da DAAAA, Da-de daaaaa..."

Not as many bands as last year, presumably on account of the looming rain, but more individual spectators lining the course, several of whom even had the sharps and the eyesight to holler our names off of our race bibs as we ran past - a fun day!

I had water at the aid stations and gels at miles 2, 6, and 10.

What would you do differently?:

Seed myself a bit further forward at the start. I had placed myself near the BACK of the black corral & felt like I was passing people the entire race.
Post race
Warm down:

After collecting my medal and finisher's T-shirt (underarmour!) I made my way ever-so-slowly to my car. I stopped several times to lean on fences and stretch. I was so happy to see the car I nearly cried. That's when I'd discovered my sprained right shoulder. Don't ask me how someone sprains a shoulder while running, but there it was. Ouch. Drove as carefully as I'd walked.

At home, I threw a party. Fortunately a few BTers were already there to help with some of the labor. lisaj1 is a real whiz-bang milkshake maker! :) We had a great time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. took the first mile way too slow

2. other than that, just training! time to start adding some speedwork and hills - even the barely-perceptible inclines of Houston feel like "hills" on race day, to those of us doing most of our training at Rice and Memorial!

One of my friends kept insisting I'd made my goal. Um, no, that would be, I MISSED my goal, by 1:15. Still, I was very happy with my effort on this one - left nothing on the course! :)

Event comments:

This is a well-organized, well-supported race. It's filling faster every year, so sign up early!

Great job Celeste! That first mile killed me too with the crowds! We will both meet our goals next year! Sorry we couldnt make it to the post party and you couldnt make it to dinner. Hopefully next time we can plan a little better.

Outstanding effort out there CS

I know that you did not think your pacing was a bit off but unless your on a track, it is really tough to hit the numbers spot on. The trick is to focus on the current mile your running and not worry about the previous/next mile. (Live in the Moment???)

Surely this is made all that much worse by terrain, mis-placed mile markers and of course, the crowds.

I might suggest that you did really well and as evidence, look at your final 1.1 mile pace. (10:36 Minutes per Mile) You had a really strong kick and a great finish and best of all, you ran just about a 5:30 Negative Split.

We run the Half at about our LT Pace and so trimming time off of our Personal Best is always difficult. Chopping 6:48 off of your PB is absolutely fabulous

Most folks measure improvement at this distance in 10's of seconds.

You may have missed your time goal by a bit, but you surely ran an excellent race with a very strong finish and did very well following your pace plan. (Best of all, you had a great after race FE)

I have no doubt that achieving your time goal will happen in the short term. (Just need to go run another race or two)

Good On Ya

Too bad you don't live in SC, we could run together! AWESOME JOB on your race, I have a very similar goal for a half on Feb 3rd. I thought I wanted to finish in under 2:45 but after doing 2:40 in training this weekend, I'm going for 2:30. After reading your RR, I feel empowered and have decided to make sure I don't start too far back. Luckily, this is a smaller race than yours.

Good job! If I get as close as you did to your goal I will be thrilled! But, I won't be entertaining after the race... that's just insane! Just kidding....

You did great!

How different a year is when you have experience and expecations. You kicked butt out there, worked your plan and improved a huge amount.

I think the above poster said a lot as far as pacing and expectation...mile markers in right place..usually not.

To have a party afterwards....what a great idea!

Congrats on an awesome race!!

Next year I'm putting you right behind the timing mat with the Kenyans. Then those damn crowds won't cost you that 1:15!

This visual makes me giggle:  TV cameras showing glimpses of little porcelin-white redheaded me bouncing around just behind that line of brown-skinned, cable-muscled intensity.

Thanks for all of the encouragement everybody!  I am indeed really pleased with this race.

Maybe a typo but from mile 12 to mile 31.1 you had a phenominal pace. Great job. You'll get you're goal next 1/2 mary knowing what you know now.

Great job, Celeste! Sorry I didn't make it to the party, perhaps next year! How funny that my time this year was so similar to yours from last year....I hope next year will bring the same coincidence!

Great job, Celeste.  Congratulations.  I liked your comment about starting farther to the front.  You are correct.  That's what I did in my last marathon and it made the first mile much easier.  Everyone was passing me instead of the other way around.    Sounds like you guys had fun.

Great race Celeste! I think all the best people go one 1:15 or so over their goal at the 1/2 mart and 1/2 IM distance. That's what I hear anyway...
