Subject: Kennesaw Mountain Cyclists - MUST READ

I just got this email from a fellow triathlete - here's another meeting about restricting a road to cyclists:

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that this is a National Park Service meeting, not a Cobb County Meeting.

Mountain Road Users (pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists):

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park will hold a public meeting on Monday, January 22, at 7:00 p.m. to address critical safety issues on the
mountain road involving mixed use by pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. The meeting will be held in the Visitor Center auditorium. The public meeting is the first step toward developing a management strategy to provide a safe experience for visitors traveling the mountain road.

The mountain road was constructed to provide vehicular access to the top of Kennesaw Mountain so park visitors can understand its key importance during the Atlanta campaign of the Civil War. The mountaintop provides a panoramic view of the region’s important geographic features, revealing
the strategy of Confederate and Union troop movements and battle lines during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Access to the top of the mountain is considered critical to interpreting the park’s significance. In recent years the steep, narrow, winding road has received increasing use by pedestrians and bicyclists. The road was not designed for multi-modal use, presenting inherent dangers when pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles share the same road  surface. The steep 12% grade, lack of road shoulders, and numerous blind curves compound the safety issues. An engineering study prepared in 2003 by the Federal Highway Administration identified major safety concerns with the mixed usage of the
Kennesaw Mountain Road
.

This was echoed in a 2004 analysis by Federal transportation planners who found it imperative that safe alternatives for pedestrians and bicycles be developed. Many mountain road users recognize these dangers, and have shared their concerns with the park.  The National Park Service invites mountain road users including pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists to attend the public meeting and assist with identifying solutions that the park will implement. Management solutions must continue to allow vehicular access to the top of the mountain and provide for visitor safety. Representatives from Cobb County DOT and the University of Georgia will be present. UGA will be conducting a survey of mountain road users in 2007 to get additional public input.

Sincerely,

Daniel R. Brown
Superintendent
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

I'll be at this meeting on Monday and the Columns Drive one on Tuesday.

They already close the Mountain Road to everyone except those who use their trolley on the weekends.   I can't believe that they would restrict the use for those that want to go up there on the weekdays.

Quite honestly, I probably would have never visited Kennesaw Mountain if it wasn't such an awesome place to train.  And I have taken time to enjoy and be cognizant of my surroundings.  In fact, just visiting it to train, made me spend about 2 hours one night on Wikipedia reading about the battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

Of course, if this means that I can get out of doing hill repeats, then....

I'll be there on the 22nd.

This just in....

Georgia's General Assembly will vote today on a piece of legislation that will restrict bike riding to only driveways and cul de sacs.  Speaker Glenn Richardson said, "The nation's obesity problem is a growing concern.  However, there are safer ways for people to ride their bikes; namely in the comfort of their own driveway or on indoor trainers.  The last thing Georgia needs is more traffic caused by people trying to exercise "

I understand the safety concerns but this is getting out of control.  And I have never visited Columns or Kennesaw

WHAT??? That is unbelievable that the GA General Assembly is going to restrict bike riding to cul de sacs and drive ways!! I have strong doubts about the constitutionality of such a law if it were to pass with regard to freedom of movement/right to travel issues. Time to do some homework

It is the resposibility of any elected official to be informed about issues before voting or even commenting about legislation. This man is obviously not very well informed

I thought if I added indoor trainers to the quote people would catch on.  Instead, everyone was like "whoa, the speaker knows about trainers!"

LOL....sorry my humor caused concern. I would still like Meredith to turn in her homework

ADollar79 - 2007-01-16 11:05 AM Apparently Meredith missed the sarcasm font!

There are other sections of this board besides CoJ and the Georgia forum. Not everyone is familiar with the "sarcasm font."

What is going on in our crazy state? The way things are going I might as well move to the coldest state, Minnesota! At least there they have more mulit-use paths, bike lanes, parks and lakes for open water swimming than they know what do with!

We have lawyers on this forum...why can't we join in the fun.  Perhaps we should write some legislation and submit it to one of our commissioners to formaly propose.

Can you use sarcasm font in legislation?

This is second-hand knowledge (from my husband), so maybe Brett can add his thoughts on the meeting too:

Kirk went to the Kennesaw Mountain meeting last night, since I had Girl Scouts. He said it was different than he expected, they don't really want to shut down the road to cyclists, but they realize that there is a potential for someone to be injured with the increased traffic. The meeting was more to get suggestions from the public about what they could do to make things safer. From what he said, I liked the suggestion of charging a nominal fee for parking (like the johnson ferry trail does) and then making the road a mixed-use - one side for buses only (funded by parking fee) and one side for cyclists, runners, walkers. Sounded like a good meeting - actually trying to plan before things become a problem - I'm okay with that.
