I'm thinking about doing the 5430 Long Course Tri in Boulder, CO. I've never done a half Iron man before, does anyone have some knowledge of the race that has run it?

Great race, great course.  Gets hot on the run though....no shade around the Rez.  aid stations every mile on the run which is nice.  They typically have ice too.  The bike course is fun IMO.

Have not down the long, but have done the sprint and did the Peak as a relay where I was the runner. Great venue, awesome direction/organization, but yes it can be HOT, especially in August. There is a nice HIM in September called Harvest Moon that is also supposed to really nice.

I did the 5430 Long Course in 2006.  Course is considered hard from what I understand, but I have no basis for comparison since that was my first half ironman.  The bike course goes through some fairly significant rollers.  The run course has a couple of hills as well, but the real issue is the lack of shade.  So, if the weather is as hot as it can get in Boulder in August, that course can be very challenging.

The race organization is fantastic.  Really pretty much flawless.

My complaint this year was large drafting packs, but that's the fault of the USAT officials, not the race organizers (and I understand that this is a common problem at long course events).  There were LARGE groups of people drafting on the bike course this year.  Aside from the fact that drafting is cheating, they're just hard to get around.

Great race.  Very well organized.  I personally think it's a really easy course...I almost set a bike PR even with getting a flat!  And no, I wasn't drafting.

VERY competitive though.  It's Boulder.  Sheesh...those guys take this racing thing WAY too seriously...just be ready for some elbows in the swim and maybe a less stellar than usual AG placing.  As my coach put it in response to my comment about how competitive it felt out there, "It's Boulder.  You don't step to the line unless you're serious."

But really, good choice for a first, IMHO.

The 5430 was my first HIM, and I loved it! I thought the bike course was fantastic, and fast. The run course was hot, and I'd prefer not to have to loop past the finish line, but nonetheless, the majority of the run course is on packed dirt roads which is super nice on the knees.

The race course directors are fabulous! I have completed the Boulder Peak 3 times now, and decided to do the HIM just this past year. They put on a great race and are very accomodating for the new triathletes. The informational session and support along the course is very encouraging, and the spectators are great.

Don't be shy! Come join us this year!!!

Yeah ditto. I did it last year and it was my 1st HIM. I had done a few other races organized by the same people so I knew what to expect in that respect, but overall I thought it was a great course for a 1st HIM.

I kinda thought the heat could be killer. Whats a good way to get ready for that? I think the heat is one thing that got me in my first tri.

Some people may not think this is smart, but I would say, do your training rides in the middle of the afternoon in July(say 11-3)  instead of morning.   Nice thing about that time of day is that if you use the bike paths, they open up when it is over 90.

As long as I carry enough fluids, it as not been a big deal to me

Agreed, when I was training for the Colorado tris, running and biking in the middle of the day was the best training possible. Just be sure to bring the following:
Food
Water
Ecaps or some sort of salt tablet
endurance drink
Lather the sun screen up before the ride!

I agree with jc. You need to train for the situation, so you know what to expect and you gain the confidence that you can succeed in the high heat.

I went on a couple of long rides and long runs on the hot days. Last summer was a killer for the heat in Denver. I could pretty much count on being out of commission the rest of the day, after training in 100 degree weather. I'd leave at like 10 or 11, and have the trails to myself mostly.

There are water stations with gels, water, coke, etc. every mile. It is grueling in the heat, there really is NO shade at all. Everyone is very aware of the situation and more than happy to help out. I started cramping and the gal next to me noticed my limp. She offered some electrolite tabs, which I had forgotten before I set out. That was great to see the comraderie out there!

You can order them here
http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=PRODUCT&CAT=ELECT&PROD.ID=4037&OM...
or I know that Fleet Feet sports in Boulder carried them last summer when I was there.
