Does this belong in COJ? I guess if I'm asking.............

So I start doing a couple of miles on the thing when on the treadmill next to mine, this woman comes on with an extra large heavily flavored coffe and a foreign newspaper that is at least 30% larger than the NYTimes!

1 - The paper I didn't mind until one of the pages fell and almost wrapped it self around my right leg. She had followed it with her eyes but didn't care and continued after it safely fell out her HER way.
2 - But the coffee was completely out of the question from before she even got on her "walk at a snails pace while reading machine"

- There were others waiting to RUN! on the thing
- I was not the only one completly distracted by the strong smell of the coffee (but of course I had to be right next to her)
- I never thought a newspaper would be dangerous on a treadmill but leave it to some one like her to discover how to do that.

In the end, having her newspaper try to hump my leg was my excuse for practically exploding on her. Quickly, others chimed in about the coffee and a staff member (probably asst. mngr), asked her to put the paper away.

She slowly shrunk to about 3" tall and tried to leave in the most discrete manner she could - not an easy thing to do in the middle of a room full of type-A's that are alredy furious at her.

I feel better.

I can see your point about her not grabbing her paper before it hit her leg, but she has just as much right to WALK as anyone else does to run.  At least she is there doing something.

I've smelled far worse things than flavored coffee in a gym..

I kinda feel bad for her.

I wonder if she was new and just didn't know. I've been "that girl" and it feels horrible.

I'm just curious as to where you would rank this "bad experience" with the coffee lady on a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being the worst?

I think she should be allowed to walk as long as she kept to the 30 minute max workout for peak hours.

But anyway, thats where my feeling bad for her goes away.

GO YOU!  You're my hero!  You had the balls to do what I, and many others couldn't do.

Sorry dude. I think you were out of line. No doubt she was rude about the newspaper part, not apologizing or trying to get it. But you could have just said something to her without going off on her.

But other than that, I don't see anything wrong with her walking, drinking coffee, or reading the newspaper. I can't see that being a violation of a gym policy.

I think you did the right thing. If you are there to workout then workout. I do not mind her walking but coffee on the treadmill.........give me break!!! Seriously how hard are you working if you are enjoying coffee. Next thing you know they will have doughnuts as well!!!

The loose paper could really be a injury risk given she couldn't keep to herself.

Krispy Kremes on the treadmill. Why didn't I think of that. I'm gonna get that quick start button really sticky.

Great.... now I'm going to want Krispy Creams and coffee on my run tomorrow morning... thanks...

I'd say the biggest thing she was at fault for was not paying attention to her surroundings and being considerate of others.  Walking - fine, reading the paper - fine, coffee - fine (but perhaps not allowed at all gyms?).  But like the rest of us she has to keep others safe and her stuff in order.

As for the paper, I was just reading the paper on a stationary bike today.  I'm in HR training, had a 30 minute ride scheduled for today in Zone 1-2, my bike is in the shop for a tune up, and I don't think a 30 minute easy ride is appropriate in a spinning class where the rest of them are sweating their butts off.  So I just hopped on a cushy lifefitness bike (which would have been soooo much better with a donut and coffee).  I got going and brought my HR up to upper zone 1 and cadence to 85-90 and read my paper.  I kept it neat and orderly in front of me the whole time and didn't open it wide to bug the folks around me.  No different than all the books and magazines I see everyday.

Anyway, I feel your frustration and have my share of it in the pool with lane hogs, etc.

If a page of newspaper hitting your leg is capable of taking you down, you may want to take those chicken legs over to the weights and put more muscle on them!

1 - I have not problem with someone drinking what they want, regardless if it's no my taste. That was just a by-product of my losing it on her...... It was very distracting and annoying to me and others in the immidiate area.

2 - I don't care that she was reading. I doubt she had the time to catch the paper. It was the fact that she didn't care and assumed someone else will pick it up is what got me going. She is no rookie at this gym and she has done this sort of thing before. She brings all her stuff and is clutz with everything, constantly hitting people and banging all over the place.

3 - As much as I hate it, I do recognize she has equal rights to the treadmill, she pays membership too. If she was happy crawling on the thing, on all fours, great for her. Another by-product from my irk. (however, just a tiny bit of consideration goes a long way with me)
NOTE - In my gym, there is no time limit on the treadmill

4 - Physically, a piece of paper around my leg is not capable of bringing me down of course. When anything wraps itself around my leg while I'm a moving surface and don't expect this changes the story for me

5 - I don't need anyone's apology. Just at least, show that you realize you did something wrong and correct it to where you are not affecting others - is fine with me. Hey, I've gotten hit, pushed, stepped on, etc and if I realize it can't be helped then I honestly don't even have to brush it off, it never happened.

She is a regular there and is popular for carrying her stuff around while being very clumsy. She is no angel as she has demonstrated to be very arrogant in the past like today. She sometimes hogs up double the space she needs in the stretbhing area. People are constantly moving aside for her, others get annoyed and leave in a huff.

I have a good amount of tolerance for people as long as I see that they can't do something, are having a hard time, etc. (I'm usually the first person to help another out if needed)
However, if you are abusive, pushy and/or just don't care what you do to others I quickly turn into another person entirely.

I agree!  I think yours and everyone else's reaction was out of line.  newbie or regular, reactions like you describe is why people think athletes can have an elitist attitude.

Nah... none of us were there, so we don't know all the circumstances, etc.  From your latest post it sounds like this person should have known better.  I can completely understand the frustration.  Again, we weren't there to see the whole thing so hard to judge.

Well,
I never understand people trying to read while they are exercising anyway.
How can you exercise and read? even working at zone 1 it is hard to read and understand what you are reading.
I think people doing that are just going trough the motions.

There's a guy who shows up at my gym regularly in the mornings and reads the paper, drinks coffee, and makes phone calls while on a stationary bike. It's not a problem to get a machine, and as far as I know, no one has said anything to him. I'm really more disturbed by his attire - he wears print boxers and button oxford shirts.
