Champion 6742 The Green Between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh | Subject: New study: endurance sports dangerous to heart? http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=sportsNews&stor... From the article: They believe Ventricular arrhythmia (VA), which could have many underlying causes, may be triggered by intense exercise or that endurance sports could promote the arrhythmia along with genetic or environmental factors. More here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-2559209,00.html Including this: Marathons and triathalons are fast-growing events, more than 10,000 people regularly running, cycling and swimming long distances. But the super-fit athletes who train hard for such races can develop a life-threatening condition called ventricular arrhythmia (VA), in which the heart beats at an irregular rate and rhythm, according to the Belgian study. The condition increases the chance of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, which kills 500 healthy Britons a year. Discuss amongst yourselves... |

Extreme Veteran 555 Land of living sighs | Subject: RE: New study: endurance sports dangerous to heart? Didn't read the study, I'm not a doctor. I wonder how many "healthy" people drop down dead whle just living and how many of them are studied? There was a similar study about middle aged hockey players and how they "developed" heart problems. The media scared a bunch of people from engaging in sports - people who normally would have no problems. As they say with all things - talk to your doctor before engaging in any strenuous activity...even if your doctor knows sqwat about excercise/endurance related issues. Sorry about the diatribe. "studies" drive me nuts as they are always taken out of context and without any real-life application. |

Elite 2608 Denver, Colorado | Subject: RE: New study: endurance sports dangerous to heart? I've read similar stuff about how endurance training can, in some ways, be bad for the heart. I've also read that high intensity interval training (HIIT) is, in some ways, better for the heart. Note: HIIT needs to be really intense, like sprints, or weight circuits. Anything longer than a 400m run would not qualify as the intensity would be too low. And finally, there is the third option: do both. I do both. My favorite HIIT exercises involve using weights, either barbell complexes or kettlebell swings and snatches. I throw these in all the time, even when I'm supposed to be building an "aerobic base," because they're fun, tough, and good for variety. |

Master 2052 Colorado | Subject: RE: New study: endurance sports dangerous to heart? What. Ever. caution: non-medical opinion ahead Look, if you have a bum heart, you have a bum heart. That sucks, but the chances of your heart fatally malfunctioning due to excersize are SO SLIM that it in no way overshadows the health benefits that you might gain from partaking in said excesize. This type of study annoys me. If you don't want to excersize, don't excesize, but don't go around abstaining because you think it will kill you. If you have concerns, go to your doc, and find a way to make it work for you and your heart. Something's gonna get you in the end. It could be that mole that went unchecked, the car you didn't see coming around the bend, or a freak heart thing that happens while you run. Be smart, get medical advice, live your life. |

FWIW, I would rather drop dead of a heart condition than give up running. Exercise is my drug of choice so I will take my chances. |

I usually log them in a big bunch after 2 weeks or so. I have a paper log at home, but I am at work (pretending to work) thus I can't update it presently Hey give me credit, I actually went back and added in the entire year of 2006, I didn't join BT until late in the year so that took FOREVER! |

Elite 2796 Texas | Subject: RE: New study: endurance sports dangerous to heart? Number of heart attack patients I've taken care of in the last five years: 500+ Number who were (some or all of these) overweight, out of shape, smokers, poor diet: 500+ Number who seemed to be in good physical shape: uh, zero. That's only my personal anecdotal experience, but I'm convinced. Edited to add: Youngest over-weight guy to fall over dead from a heart attack (in my experience: 2 guys are tied at 28 years old. Master 3019 West Jordan, UT | Subject: RE: New study: endurance sports dangerous to heart? I think there is some trouble with people doing too many miles year after year. There really aren't any extra benefits to be had from training say 15-20 hours a week over 6-10 hours a week. That extra exercise is somewhat hard on your body while providing limited extra aerobic benefits. Perhaps there is some truth to the article. I am not saying sit on the couch, but maybe Ironman level training for long periods of time is actually kinda bad for you. |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: New study: endurance sports dangerous to heart? yeah I think you are better off dropping dead because your in shape vs all the problem you get when your out of shape. The study sounds like someone was lucky to get some grant money. When I run the chicago marathon I expect to hear about the person who died during that race. Its just apart of the game. I do not think anyone has died since I been running it though. |
