Subject: Sex on wheels... but WHICH wheels?

So I took the plunge today and ordered my first bike... the '06 QR Seduza.  I got a great deal on a new one for $1930 shipped.  It comes with the Alex ALX 320 wheels which just won't do.  I'm a heavy guy (250-ish) and am going to need some spokes to support this ample body of mine.  =)

What do you clydesdales suggest for a decent yet affordable set of wheels for training?  I don't want to break the bank but I don't want to break a spoke either.   Suggestions?

Thanks.

What kind of of a price range are you looing for? I know a couple of local guys (that weigh 250)that ride campy euros' and have had zero issues with them (they have rode them for several years old now). I was just talking with the Zipp rep the other day and they make clydesdales versions of their wheels....and the rep stated that a 250lb person could ride the Zipp 404 Clydesdales daily without having any issues. Neither of these wheels are inexpensive though.

Call the dealer back and ask that they put heavier gauge spoke on the wheels.  If they refuse, ask them if you could simply swap out the ALX 320's for something like the Rigida DPL 18 built up with a heavy gauge spoke.

As far as training wheels go just get the heaviest cheapest, least aero wheels you can find. That way when you put your race wheels on you will really fly. Unless you don't plan on having separate race wheels, thats the most logical way. why waste any money on training wheels.

I'll definitely look into the Zipps around competition time... but for everyday use I would like to find an appropriate set for under $400 if I can.  I brought this up with the dealer and inquired about an upgrade/switch out of the wheels and he had a few suggestions but A) they were a little pricey and B) he didn't have any in stock either.  He suggested some Mavic Ksyriums SLs... which are nice, but at $900 just a little out of my range.

In keeping with the Mavic line... the Mavic Cosmos are more within my price range and have a larger spoke count 24/28.  More suggestions?

I have the Cosmos on my road bike and have had no problems whatsoever with them. If you want  to go even cheaper, I've ridden Mavic Open Pros also without problems, you can get them here on Ultegra hubs for ~$200 a set:

Performance also has the Ksyrium Elites for half the price your guy is quoting you on the SLs

Wow... 32 spokes on the Open Pros... that is twice as many that come on the ALX set.  Thanks for the link Bear... I'll definitely look into those.

Mavic Open Pro's.  32 spoke count minimum.  You need a basic, sturdy wheel.  Nothing fancy.
