Pre-race routine:

Woke up, felt sick, threw up everything I ate the night before. Great start to my day. It was a 45 min drive to where the race was so we left around 7:30am.
Event warmup:

Ran fairly easy for a km and then proceded to throw up my breakfast!!! I felt pretty bad.

Comments:

I had the flu so I had thrown up everything I put in my body since 8pm Saturday night so I felt pretty weak, especially after I threw up my breakfast before warm-up. Surprisingly I started to feel good after that and when the race staretd I felt really good. The first k was a gradual downhill then gradual uphill so I was pretty surprised when I saw 3:53 as my first km. Even more surprised when my next 2kms on gradual uphills and flats. I realised I was on pace for a sub 40 10km and I had visions of glory, but I hit the 5th k which is a hard uphill and lost it. Not having any fuel caught up to me and I felt just drained. The next 3k's were a struggle, and it was all I could do to keep myself going. Finally we hit a part of the course with some flats rather than rolling hills and I managed to recover a bit. I finished all right, but felt like I had run 15km not 10km. Pretty rough
What would you do differently?:

It's hard to say, I felt like I ran well other than being sick. If I hadn't been sick I could have pushed my PB for 10km by going sub 41.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and walked around trying to loosen my legs up. My friend who I was with had finished just before me, so we went for a light jog and stretched for 10 mins after finishing our waters

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No doubt about it the flu.

Event comments:

Another good event in the Vancouver Island Race series. It was the first time I had done this particular race and I was very pleased with the course. It ran right along the edge of the ocean so the views were great.
