I have eliminated alcohol and soda from my diet (except on rare occasion...), but I still drink ALOT of coffee. It is not unusual for me to drink close to a pot a day.

I know that is way too much, but I really love it.

My question is, how much is the caffeine impacting my training and fitness (not to mention overall health).

We just ahd this discussion on a BFL forum. Moderate coffee use, in my opinion is fine. There are some benefits to drinking it and many athletes do. I generally have 2-3 cups a day and I drink 2-4 cups of water between each cup of coffee. Caffeine is a diuretic, so you want to drink extra water.

Good point Lara. I have mine with Powder creamer (10 cals) and Splenda (0 cals). It took a while to switch off real sugar, but I like Splenda the best of the sweeteners.

An interesting negative article on caffeine: http://www.t-mag.com/articles/214app.html
Yet, this article says exactly opposite: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/press/releases/press01052004.html

so who knows....

About 10 years ago I swithched to decaf and black. It took a while to get used to but then I found Hazelnut Decaf, love the stuff. The best part is when I do get the nerve up for the occasional event two cups of coffie now sends me into the stratosephere. Just be careful of those headachs comming off of a pot a day. My withdrawls from that quantity were miserable.

I'm down from a pot of coffee a day to two cups in the morning, but since there is no real value in coffee, I've begun to switch to black tea - it will be gradual, but a stiff cup of black tea at least has some value for the flavinoids. When I'm off the coffe, I want to add some green tea to the mix - there's some pretty good research on the benefits.

One thing I've kept in my diet is a glas (sometimes two) of Merlot in the early evening. Whacha think? Is this sticking my early am cardio?

Unfortunately, I am a caffeine addict. I have found that whenever I try to quit, headaches begin to flare up. Originally I thought it was caffeine withdrawls. Then, I spoke to allergist about it on a long flight and she explained that the caffeine in coffee, Cokes, and even Excedrin relieved sinus pressure headaches which is what I was experiencing.

Coffee, Diet Coke, Excedrin...they are a good thing.
