It's cold out.  No one wants to run and the trainer is boring as hell.  What we need is a swim challenge.

So here it is.  Pledge how many days a week you plan on swimming.  Not how many per month, how many per week.  There will be no sandbagging or waiting until the end here.

We will begin the challenge on the 1st.  As part of the first workout of the challenge, do a set of 6x50 swim golf and post your best (lowest) score.  At the end of the challenge, we will repeat this and see who managed to drop their score the most.

I'll start things off.  I pledge to swim 5 days a week.  Every weekday, I will get wet.  I'll post the swim golf score on the 1st.

Who's in?

There seems to be a bit of pull towards a bike/run challenge but a swim challenge is something I could really use! I've never done one of these challenges so I'm not overly sure what you mean by 6x50 golf and best (lowest) score... so I could use some clarification or some overall instructions on how this works but otherwise I'm in!

swim golf.  You swim 50 yards at a moderate pace (about what you would do for a long continous swim).  You count your strokes and time yourself.  Then add your stroke count to your time in seconds.

so if you swim that 50 in 2:00 and it takes 40 strokes, then that's a score of 120 + 40 or 160.

As you get better, you swim faster with less strokes, so that score will drop.

the 6x just means you do it 6 times, then take your best score.

I'm in... 3 days per week.

Swim golf is fun... I can get around 82-84 at best right now.  I'd like to see how it improves over the month.

okie dokie -- I am going to give this a try! Sign me up for 3 days a week. I will get my score on the first day of the month that I am in the pool -- That will be Friday.

Do we report our score somewhere, and the number of days we have swum for the week? So for February I will have swum one time by 2/4. A short week, not enough time for three days.

A swim challenge based on number of times per week.  I can do that (need thatSurprised

I will join the masses and target 3x per week.  (That is always my goal but I seem to come short and just make up the minutes in 1 or 2 longer sessions.  This will keep me honest)

Golf - lets see, when I played I was a * handicap.  Oh not that golf.

BTW, I never realized it was at your 1000 TT pace not your 50 pace.

I am guessing I will start off at about an 89 for short course or 102 long course (don't know how it will be set up when I get to the pool Thursday)  Either way, I have much room for improvement.

Why is everyone pledging 3x per week?  Is that very gill worthy?  3x per week is maintmence level.

Who's gonna man up and pledge something higher then 3x per week?  I feel bad about only doing 5x.  If I had a pool that was open on the weekends, I'd be pledging 6 or 7.

come on people....It's a challenge.  Make it challenging.

oops...

OK...here's my reasoning...new to this whole tri thing, swim being the weakest link, and linking all of this training together is a challenge.  I've got a cycling base, but that's it.  I'm using the BT 16 week, swim-focused plan and it calls for 3x per week.  Yes, I could "be a man" and throw in an extra day or two (and then possibly over-train and/or burn myself out a bit before I even really get started).

My suggestion, if 3x a weak (pun intended) bugs you, set a min. number of swims/week that'll allow somebody to "accept" your challenge with grace and dignity.  Sounds like 4x might be the starting number.

Cheers

What about water skipping??? I could even wear swimmies while doing it. For those not familiar, I saw a preview of the next Olympic sport at our Y last week. This gentleman took water walking to a new high, all while wearing the classic PURPLE SPEEDO.

no no, if 3x a week is a challenge to you and you are on a strict plan calling for that, then by all means stick with it.  I just don't want to see people sandbagging and only pledging something that they can easily manage, or something they do normally.  It's supposed to be challenging, that's why it's a challenge

I only (used to) sandbag when I play real golf - kidding - I despise sandbaggers.  I'm still "in" and if I can squeeze in an extra swim w/o I will.

I love doing these challenges.  They really help me push harder than I would otherwise.

Sorry if you think I am a weinie, but I can only manage 3x per week.  That is more than I am doing now, and because of my tight schedule, this is actually going to be quite challenging.  Not physically, but time-wise.  I pledge 3x per week at 1 hour per session.

I am working on a new improved swim stroke with my swim coach.  All this swim time should definitely help me get faster.  YAY!

I will not be able to post a swim golf score until next week.  I am going out of town tomorrow and won't be back until late Sunday.  I'll post it as soon as I get it.

I am in too! I really need this challenge, and need to get me arse into the pool! I haven't been swimming AT ALL the past few months, and my pool is a 30 minute drive from my house (closer to work but I work from home a lot). So... I am going to pledge 3 x per week.

To me, that is a HUGE step up from what I have been doing. I will start on Friday, and will get you a swim golf number next week.

I'd like to be able to have a few weeks of swimming base to back me up, and then I'll get up the nerve to attend the Masters classes. I know I'm a wimp for not going but I'm sure I'd be THE slowest of the group!

I was able to get to the pool tonight - not part of the February count but I did establish my "base" golf score

Low - 86 High 87  Was pretty consistent.  Times were within 2 sec and stroke count within 1

OK, relative to the other scores I've seen posted, did I do something wrong or do I just suck at swim golf?

My best score was 64 sec for the 50 in 56 strokes...so post a 120 for me.

You just have a great chance to "win" the challenge by having the most improvement.

thanks...and since we're on the "golf" theme, your post reminded me of a great scene from Caddyshack:

"...the Dali Lama himself. The twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes; the grace; bald; striking...So, we finish the 18, and he's going to stiff me. And I say, 'Hey. Lama, hey. How about a little something for, you know, the effort, you know?' And he says, 'Oh, uh, there won't be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.' So I've got that going for me...which is nice."
