34F / 1C
Total Time = 1h 17m 8s
Overall Rank = 21/103
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/12
Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 5:30. Had an Almond Butter Sandwich. I had recently switched from Peanut Butter to Almond Butter. I heard and read that peanut butter has some cancer causing fungus associated with it. I prefer the taste of the peanut butter, but the almond butter was fine. Double checked my check list and got loaded up. I was in the truck ready to go when I decided to go back in the house and get my running tights. That turned out to be a wise decision. Was on the road about 6:50. Got there early enough to park in the lot next to the trasition area.
Event warmup:

Did an easy run for 10 minutes
Swim
  • 07m 34s
  • 350 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt like I was moving in slow motion. I was happy with my time since it was only 11 secs. slower than when I did the Tri LAC last fall. I wish my rank was better in my age group. I should be happy with the overall rank because I have always been below the 50th percentile in the swim.
What would you do differently?:

I did get slowed down by someone in front of me because I had to breast stroke to see if I could pass. I need to practice sighting more when I practice.
Transition 1
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

T1 was run to bike
What would you do differently?:

Can not think of anything
Bike
  • 43m 57s
  • 13.38 miles
  • 18.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I did not mind the hills and the wind. I just keep telling myself that the hills and wind are bothering everyone else but I can fight through it. It would have been nice to have volunteers at every intersection. It is always nice when you do not have to think about what direction to go. My calves started to get little mini-cramps with about 3 miles left. I was slightly panicked that one would totally cramp up and cause me to crash. Never happened though. I am very happy with my ranking. I always rank best in the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I wore my fleece jacket. I guess I could find something that was a little more aerodynamic. I should have drank more. That may have helped with the cramps.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

T2 was bike to swim
What would you do differently?:

I would run and bike without socks. That would save a little time.
Run
  • 23m 6s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

The run sure seemed longer that 3.1 miles. When we hit the sign that said 2 miles left, it felt like I had gone at least 1.5 miles. Wearing the Tempo Trainer really helped me keep an even pace. This was a personal best in a 5K.
What would you do differently?:

Do my warm-up a little closer to the start time
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out at the pool and watch others finish

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to get faster in the swim.

Event comments:

I wore my running tights over my unitard and a light long-sleeved shirt and fleece. This was just right for keeping me comfortable.

Great race!  You sound a lot like me -- best on bike, ok on run, and swim is the most challenging.

In warmer weather, no socks is something I might consider too (I need to practice running without them); however, in those temps, I was glad to have them.  Good decision on the running tights.
