I'm one of those people who despises the treadmill from the depth of every molecule in my body. I did an hour forty on Tuesday in sub zero windchills (and frost and ice did form on the inside of my jacket sleeves) and then a 20 miler on Thursday with windchill in the low teens. I survived both, but the part quoted above about having the second half of your run be with the wind at your back is really key. Unfortunately for me and where I live in Chicago I have no choice but to run into the wind coming home. If it's a shorter run the super low temps are okay, but when you're trying to finish the last five of a twenty miler--not so good.

The cold has really slowed me down and I'm getting very tight muscles from running in it over and over again. I have a marathon in a couple of weeks and I'm going to give in and do the next couple of run workouts on the treadmill (luckily they are less than an hour) so I can keep my muscles warm and prevent them from getting so tight. And so that I can actually achieve marathon pace intervals. For some reason I can't seem to reach them like I need to while running into a 17 mph wind at 5 below. Hmmm . . .

ran for an hour yesterday. Temp was -4 with -24 windchill.

You DA MAN. No, seriously.

My current rules: As long as the temp is in positive digits, as long as it's not actually raining, as long as the ice isn't so bad you'll fall on your , and as long as the windchill isn't dropping the temp into the negatives: then, you run.

as long as it's not actually raining

Does that rule only apply to the winter? Or only when it's cold enough the rain forms ice when it hits the ground? I tried that one with my coach. His response: "What if it is cold and rainy on race day? You'll have to run in it. You can't say, 'Sorry, I don't run when it's raining and cold outside.' You're going to need to get the right gear and plan to train through it." There was no sympathy. If the rain is falling on ice and making safety an issue or hypothermia a possibility, that's another story, but just cold and/or rain--no sympathy. So I got the right gear and I train through it now. Not that I LIKE it, but I train in it.

Point well taken, but my defense I did live in the peaks of the Andes around 10,000 ft plus for 3 months this summer and it was pretty damn frigid up there

But I would never EVER trade the TX heat for those cold summers up north! Good luck not freezing out there!

7f this morning, did 9 miles. I kind of liked it. It is the 3rd or 4th run this year below 10f.

I once ran when it was -22 F, with a windchill in Vermont. It was brutal, and I only ran 3 miles, just to say I did.I regularly run when it's in the single digits. Just be prepared!

Well, I found my limit today. I'm scheduled for a 10 miler, but I'm not going out there in -37 degrees celcius, with the windchill making it feel like -50. I somehow can't see that as being healthy, regardless of how many layers I slap on.

While there are no proven risks of injury, I find that if I get out in the cold stuff and push too hard I end up being sick. I think getting that cold air to deepest parts of your lungs might accelerate anything that is going on. I don't have any major problems with the treadmill and as soon as the weather dips much below freezing I try to move my workouts inside, it also makes laundry a little easier. Once the weather gets back to the freezing area I will start pushing some workouts outdoors so I can get used to the weather but the lakefront in Chicago looks a little too close to the arctic for me right now.

I live in Texas, but I've done quite a bit a extreme cold weather training in the military and there were a few rules I followed (and made sure my guys followed) and we never had a problem with long hours of exposure:

Wear a wicking layer to get the moisture off of your skin. Thin polypro works well.

Wear an insulating layer, like Capilene fleece. It may freeze because it holds some moisture, but it will still insulate you. Igloos and snow caves insulate, so will a frozen fleece top. Experiment with what you need to stay warm. I have a long sleeve heavyweight fleece shirt and a "Windstopper" fleece vest that zips up the front so you can open it if you start to get too hot.

Wear a Gortex layer to keep the wind off of you.

Cover your head (and face if it's well below freezing) with something made of "Windstopper" fleece. Wear UV PROTECTIVE glasses. The glare will cook your eyeballs...so to speak.

If it's below 20F or so, wear mittens instead of gloves. Your fingers will keep each other warm.

A balacalava doesn't warm air, because it's not inherently warm. It will keep your face warm though. Your nasal passages warm air.

You're at more risk from losing your footing and falling than you are from having a cold injury if you do things right. Just choose your route carefully and stay alert. And enjoy it.  I like running in the cold, but then I like to run at noon in August when it's >115 heat index. There may well be something wrong with me.

Yesterday, was a scheduled 9 mile run as part of my marathon training. With temperatures below zero and windchills at -30 I decided to go running in the country. Big mistake, that I really payed for. It was like running into an icy wall and I nearly got frostbite on my hands. Luckily, I made it the 3 miles to a local bar/restaurant to warm up. Too much further and I would of been in some serious trouble.

I don't know if anyone else gets this, but I get a bunch of horrific welts/rash if i'm outside running and the come inside. Any time its like, maybe 30 or below, it happens. Theyre terribly itchy and painful. They show up (this is really gross) on my stretch marks and on my legs and stomach mostly. Most of the time I suck it up, but lately I've been unable to. Yesterday there was a -20 windchill and 20 MPH winds...yep, I didn't go running.

I don't mind running in the cold... actually prefer 20 degrees to 75 degrees ... but when it gets this cold out (sub-zero temps with windchills down around -20), my only worry is about frostbite on my exposed skin -- nose, cheeks -- because I am not comfortable covering up my face.

Reading some of the accounts here, sounds like I don't need to really worry about this?

This is definately too cold for me right now, I think it is good to see what other people think, but until they are out there in the -20 it sort of hard to take them seriously. I was out there this morning and it is so cold it just hurts like an ice cream headache and that is with nice hat and no sweat. You gotta decide for yourself personally a treadmill works for me this time of year.

One trick I have heard people that feel they need to get out in this is to use vaseline on your face where you might be exposed, remember even if you don't get frost bite you will very likely dry your skin out very badly.

OK, not running, but I raced a 27km x-c ski race yesterday with -10 temps and -30 windchill.  I had 4 layers on top and 3 layers on the bottom.  Ear muffs, baclava, and hat.  Moleskin on my nose and cheeks and Dermatone the rest of my face.  It actually wasn't too bad. That's me with bib #2076

I'm heading out for a 40 minute run after I type here at BT.com. -4 degree windchill, but I'll be bundled up like crazy. The scarf over the face is a must.

well i headed out again yesterday, 12 miles, i think it was 1 or 2 degrees before windchill factor. I think it was -20 with winchill or something. But I made it! I was kind of hating myself for the middle part when we ended up in a headwind and on a trail that wasnt combed over good enough. I survived again, but I do hope that it warms up.. Id take 20s again no problem

Too cold to run??? Here in Ontario we wouldn't have too many months of running outside if we thought running in the cold wasn't good for you. Bundle up and get out there!!

Yep. This morning in Ottawa it was -27 with a -39 windchill and there were still a few runners out along the canal. Fortunately today is my swim day so I won't be one of them. That is almost approaching "too cold" for me. Fortunately this will be a short cold snap and I should be out there again tomorrow.

I think a valid question becomes, what are you gaining by running outside? Couldn't you get just as good a workout on the treadmill? Some of you are uber hard core, but I don't get why weather like this is why God invented indoors.

I dont think it takes being hard core or insanity or anything like that to run out in this weather.  With the tech fabrics and other stuff, if you layer you are fine.  I personally get bored with treadmills and indoor tracks but use em from time to time.  I cant simulate the glow of the moon, the crunch of the snow or some of the hills in the area by running indoors.  Do I need that every workout?  Maybe not, but I enjoy it and I wouldnt be doing it if I thought I was putting myself in imminent danger.  Just bundle up and everything is ok.  If you like the treadmill, more power to ya, do that.

Good eyes on Spiderman Yams.  Hilarious!
