snoopy - 2007-02-05 10:20 AM I think a valid question becomes, what are you gaining by running outside? Couldn't you get just as good a workout on the treadmill? Some of you are uber hard core, but I don't get why weather like this is why God invented indoors.

I dont think it takes being hard core or insanity or anything like that to run out in this weather.  With the tech fabrics and other stuff, if you layer you are fine.  I personally get bored with treadmills and indoor tracks but use em from time to time.  I cant simulate the glow of the moon, the crunch of the snow or some of the hills in the area by running indoors.  Do I need that every workout?  Maybe not, but I enjoy it and I wouldnt be doing it if I thought I was putting myself in imminent danger.  Just bundle up and everything is ok.  If you like the treadmill, more power to ya, do that.

Good eyes on Spiderman Yams.  Hilarious!

well i dont mind the indoors every now and then, but 12 miles on a treadmill is enough to make me want to gouge my eyes out.

Pete10 - 2007-02-04 7:37 PM Yesterday, was a scheduled 9 mile run as part of my marathon training. With temperatures below zero and windchills at -30 I decided to go running in the country. Big mistake, that I really payed for. It was like running into an icy wall and I nearly got frostbite on my hands. Luckily, I made it the 3 miles to a local bar/restaurant to warm up. Too much further and I would of been in some serious trouble.

If you give it another whirl ever, it is best to get some Underarmour cold gear or Nike has some decent cold stuff, and go layers.  What were you wearing?

OK, not running, but I raced a 27km x-c ski race yesterday with -10 temps and -30 windchill. I had 4 layers on top and 3 layers on the bottom. Ear muffs, baclava, and hat. Moleskin on my nose and cheeks and Dermatone the rest of my face. It actually wasn't too bad. That's me with bib #2076

Is that spiderman in the back on the right?

Turns out, it WAS Spiderman...I didn't even notice him prior to the start of our wave...

Forget about drafting, did you feel any strange pulling sensations on your legs or back from Spidey attaching a free ride with the webs?  Too funny.

I also find that running in the winter mixed things up a bit and makes it fresh. Many of the routes that I use in the summer are unusable in the winter as they are not cleared of snow. Some are also ski trails in the winter. That has meant finding new routes and exploring a bit more.

If I run tonight, it won’t be till about 10pm and if the wind isn’t too bad.  Forecast says it’ll be about 5 degrees (don’t know about wind chill).  SHOULD be okay for a 30 minute run.

I haven't ran outside in almost a week, have been suffering on the treadmill becuase of the Arctic front sitting over Michigan. Well today I finally snapped, decided 9 degrees wasn't really that cold, layered up, and headed out the door. I did 4 miles on a snow covered trail and it was GREAT! I now feel bad I missed 6 days because I was being a pussy.

as long as it's not actually raining

Does that rule only apply to the winter? Or only when it's cold enough the rain forms ice when it hits the ground? I tried that one with my coach.

I am my own coach, and I gotta say: I'm not running in a cold or freezing rain. It's just a bad idea. Wet shoes, blisters on my feet, miserable. I don't like it, and on any given rainy day I can get a fine workout on the treadmill and lifting. Arguably, I'll get a better workout on the treadmill -- I'll stay on the treadmill longer than I'd voluntarily stay out in the rain.

That being said, I do like running in a warm spring or summer rain.

Look, I'm in this for the fun. I'm not in it to get tortured by my coach.
