Pacific Shoreline Marathon

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 51m 35s
Overall Rank = 1344/7342
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 176/557
Pre-race routine:

Ate a muffin and some gatorade and water. Really don't have much of a routine down.
Event warmup:

Not too much. Just walked around a bit. Was much more relaxed than I have been for previous races. First few races I was kind of intimidated and didn't know what to expect.
Run
  • 1h 51m 35s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Started at the back of the 8 minute group. It was pretty congested at the beginning which was fine because it prevented me for going all out which has been problematic in the past. The first 2 miles I was just over an 8 minute pace. A little trouble began when I had to use the Porta potty. Damn.

Tick tock. 40 seconds in there as I was looking at the counter on my watch. And to make matters worse, I tried to make up those seconds too quickly. Finally settled back down to a nice pace again.

I also wasted some time when I decided to follow a few participants on to a dirt road for a small strech. Figured it would give me a feet a little rest. Was way too much of a zig zag and the dirt road was uneven. Total waste.

1:49:59 was out the window. I ended up running 13.2 miles because of some wasted zig zags. I would have needed to run under 14 minutes for the last two miles. Wasn't going to happen.

Felt strong as I crossed the finish line though. Improved by 3 minutes over my first half-marathon even with the bathroom break.

Gorgeous day.

What would you do differently?:

Should have used porta potty one last time before starting race. Going onto a dirt road for 200 yards won't make a difference. I know I will get down into the high 1:40s very soon.
Post race
Warm down:

Got one of those space heater blankets. Used "The Stick" I bought at the Expo. Bought a spray-on bottle of something that supposedly reduces cramp. It was probably just water with aroma smell, but I can be such a sucker for gizmos :)

Met up with Sunny from BT. Wonderful person! Had drinks with her the night before. She had a solid race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still in my first season of running. Just need to continue getting mileage in.

Event comments:

Two things you should do in a race they say. I took care of it.

1) Negative split -- best thing is to take a porta potty in the first half!
2) Pass people - easy way is to insert about 500 people doing a 5k walk at the end of the race. It was fairly tight for the last mile as the walkers in the 5k converged with us. Felt like I was playing pachinko as I weaved back and forth trying to avoid people.

Great run today! I'm glad to read you are getting over the race jitters. I also noticed that this is a new PR for you. Congratulations!

Great job out there today

Sort of bumbed that I was not more organized in hooking up with all of the peeps at the race. (Would have been nice to meet you) At least I got to meet one of the "Cool Kids". I chatted with Chris this morning for a bit before the race.

Sounds like you ran a very smart race and a PR is definitely cool. It really was a perfect day to run a Half Marathon. I was actually in the front portion of the same corral that you lined up in and did not experience much congestion.

Oh and a 1:40 is definitely within your grasp

Good On Ya Mate

See you in Oceanside...

Great job Mark.  I was sure I'd see you somewhere

So go 1:49 at California.  That would be epic

Had you simply peed yourself you might have broken 1:50. Not only could you have saved 40+ seconds in the porta-potties, but most of the 5K traffic would have steered clear, opening a path for a sprint finish.

I'm just asking, 'Are you commited or aren't you?'

On the other hand, PR without peeing yourself. That's a good run any day.

Great job on the race! I had the same issue with needing to use the facilities but I skipped it and just held it.....for an hour! I'm not sure that was the smarted thing but at least it helped me make my goal!

I'm with you on meeting up with people! With so many of us there I was bummed I didn't meet anyone!
