I just picked up a Polar F11 on sale yesterday and was trying to decided which method I was going to use for my max hr. I've read a few articles about the subject and it seems everyone has a different method. I've been using the 220-28 method till I read about a plan to find your max ride and run hr. Just wondering what everyone is using?
Today I tried the max bike method but I haven't been feeling well so I layed off it.

This is one of the article's.

My wife and I used the field tests from Freil's Triathlon Training Bible.  It was easy and seems to have worked so far for us.

You don't need Max HR. Use Mike Ricci's method to determine your Lactate Threashold and from there you can find your training zones.

Amazing thread. I got through the first 6 pages till my high speed craped out. Quick question, on a TT should you be progessivly uping the resistance. I'll be doing it on a trainer. The weather here isn't exactly perfect for outdoor rides. 2F yesterday. Thanx a lot guys. Seems like that thread should be stickied somewhere.

For the TT (bike or run), the best exectution will have you holding a steady pace for all 30 minutes that has you spent right at the end (i.e., a pace you can hold for 30' but no longer).  This is hard to achieve, especially the first couple times you do it.  So it's best to go out a bit easier and finish stronger than to go out too hard and fade towards the end of the TT.

Sometimes people are shocked by the fact that my average heart rate when I run is upwards of 185-190.. and I average 195 during a race.... Just goes to show the max heart rate thing is bogus... I second, third, fourth, and fifth the motion of following Mike's advice, or Joe Friel's method of establishing your LT.

I'm another advocate of the 30 min field testds for Cycling and running, I'm due to do them again next week (21weeks before IM Austria) but when I did them last year it was LT of 144 for bike and 155 for run. This seems to mean I have a very low HR (also means I have a very low max HR) so for me to go by 220-age would be a complete disaster. Out Cycling yesterday with a training partner and at practically rthe same level of exertion (RPE) i was at least 10/12 beats lower.
In running last weeks I went up to 176 at one stage and was about to give birth (I'm male by the way).

Field tests seem to work well for me and then use TTB for zones.

Also, you can do the run TT to get your LT and just subtract 10-12 bps off of each zone and that will give you a good guess for your bike LT. Typically your bike LT is 10-12 lower than run

Attached is an Excel spread sheet you can plug your LT # into and it will give you your zones.

I'd like to give credit to the person who originally shared it with us on BT but I don't recall who it was.

I recommend doing the testing described above for each run and bike and not subtract 10-12 off your run. I'm weird and my run is highest, then swim, and then bike. My bike is more than 20 below my run.

Best is test using same method on a regular basis. I do it about 4 times a year and have for the last 24 months. It is interesting to see how it changes which effects my zones. My running HR has dropped while my cycling is creeping up. My RHR is dropping so my heart is more efficient.

Best to do the testing after a rest week and when you are feeling fresh as they are challenging to do.

Just got done with the LT test for the bike. What a workout. Ended up with a 160 HR avg. for the last 20 minutes. Thanx for the advice. I'm hoping to do the run next Monday.

Good job! These tests hurt. It's important to go into it knowing that, so you don't back down. That way you can get your true result!

I've been steadily increasing my LT numbers since I started training. I am now up to 187bpm on the run and 175 on the bike!
